A female high school teacher who was accused of having sex with six teenage male students on multiple occasions is currently facing 40 counts of s*xual assault in New Jersey.

The 35-year-old teacher, Nicole DuFault, has been indicted on charges of aggravated s*xual assault and endangerment of a child’s welfare, according to Essex County authorities. The teacher faces a tough time getting off the hook after prosecutors managed to obtain a video showing DuFault engaging in an inappropriate act with one of her victims.

DuFault is accused of continuing improper involvement with the six male students— ages 14 through 15— over a period spanning more than a year. The former Columbia High School teacher, who is currently free on a $500,000 bail, is said to have had the intercourse with the teen boys at the school where she worked and also in her car. The acts took place on multiple occasions between 2013 and 2014.

DuFault was finally arrested last September and charged with having intercourse with three male students. Two more victims were soon identified after the arrest, and the grand jury examining the case discovered a sixth victim before the indictment was made public on Tuesday.

Among the evidence against DuFault is a video on which she is shown performing oral intercourse on one of her victims, with a second close by.

In spite of the conclusive evidence against DuFault, her attorney, Timothy Smith, believes that the video is still not enough proof to show that his client is not innocent. He suggested that the high school teacher could even be the victim in this case. DuFault’s attorney has also been quick to point to her “commendable background and unblemished work performance,” which runs counter to the charges.

DuFault, who is a mother of two young boys, taught language arts at Columbia High School for nine years before her recent arrest. The two children, ages 2 and 4, have been taken into state custody following their mother’s apprehension.

In the meantime, school authorities have sent out letters to parents offering counseling assistance to students who might have been negatively impacted by the events or resulting investigation. Columbia High School Principal Elizabeth Aaron urged the school community not to be distracted by the events, according to the letter.

DuFault is scheduled to make her next court appearance on March 6.
