NWA film casts light-skinned girls as “Fine girls” and dark-skinned girls as “poor”

By  |  149 Comments

nawColorism and racism has occurred in the entertainment industry for a very long time, but it is seldom as blatant as it is in a recent NWA casting notice.

The movie detailing the trials and success of Compton rap group NWA already has its main characters, but now directors are in the process of casting for minor roles.  But a casting call for the film has outlined that they are specifically looking for women with light skin to fulfill the roles as the “fine girls.”

The casting call was posted via Gawker:

A GIRLS: These are the hottest of the hottest. Models. MUST have real hair – no extensions, very classy looking, great bodies. You can be black, white, asian, hispanic, mid eastern, or mixed race too. Age 18-30.

B GIRLS: These are fine girls, long natural hair, really nice bodies. Small waists, nice hips. You should be light-skinned. Beyonce is a prototype here. Age 18-30.

C GIRLS: These are African American girls, medium to light skinned with a weave. Age 18-30.

D GIRLS: These are African American girls. Poor, not in good shape.  Medium to dark skin tone. Character types. Age 18-30.

A lot of the outrage surrounding the casting call has been due to the request that the lower-level girls— ‘D Girls’— be darker-skinned African Americans.  Some see the qualifications and grading system as discriminatory.

TMZ reported spoke to a representative of the NWA film’s casting company, Sande Alessi Casting.  The rep said that the request on the ad was just an “innocent mistake.”  She also mentioned that the film is actually looking for a variation of skin tones for the film’s ‘poor’ girls.  The rep claimed that the A-D grades are always used when the company is doing casting, and that it was not meant to offend anyone.

The film, which has involvement from Ice Cube and Dr. Dre, is scheduled to be released next year.

Are you surprised by the casting call’s requests?

I do not see a need to be offended. It is what it is. Remember Felicia in Friday? She was a light skinned crackhead. This is a movie meant to portray the ghetto. There are both dark and light skinned ghetto girls BUT… the dark skinned girls can really kick it up a notch and make this movie more realistic and a success. That’s all they are trying to do – make it realistic. Get past the color lines. Ghetto is Ghetto. Plus, there is money to be made so I suggest all you dark skinned girls tighten up you weave, audition and get that money.

Corbin: you are truly a fool. Only a fool would fail to recognize the dogma of white supremacy. The not so subtle message is: if you have a little more white in you, you are more beautiful and more civilized. NWA said they made an “oversight” and meant to open up the casting call for “ghetto girls” to all skin types. Notice that they did not say that the B and C girls would be open to all complexions. Money? How much money do you think these extras will make? There are a lot of things one can do if you are solely driven by money. We have lost our souls – its time to get them back.

Halle Belle played a crack-head in “Do the right thing.” That is really how she got her start in the business. Their was a beautiful darked skin sister in “She Got To Have It” by Spike Lee also. Nola, the dark-skinned
sister played the lead role in that film and GOT THINGS TUNED UP FOR

May they should think out of the box this time and re-verse things. If
people did not thing out of the box, inventions would not occur. If we
did every by the directions, what would recipes be like. Their would be
    not creativity……

Turn it up and put things in reverse, and see what happens.

I might just go and see the film.

All of this light skinned, dark skinned crap needs to STOP!!! It is STUPID to discuss it.

I feel sad every time I see it and it appears to be so confusing. I do not understand the need to address it because it justifies it and we should not justify it.

Just think how stupid it sounds..light skin vs. dark skin. We are all human beings and quit falling into the slave mentality. Look at old movies and you will see the same thing going on where some white person allowed someone with lighter skin have an advantage. It is something that is being used to keep us fighting with one another. Get pass the fighting and we will be able to see progress without being concerned about someones skin tone.

@Toni…I agree that it can be sad to read these things, but I think people should see this so that those of us who are tired of colorism know NOT to support this movie. I know that it may cause division within those who don’t know any better, but for the rest of us, we will just know that this movie is not for us, and move on. This article is not intended to make people with dark skin hate people with light skin or anything like that. People need to see what’s going on though, so we can stop supporting the foolishness.

No I’m not surprised. For me I stop buying, watching or supporting the entertainment industry. The last CD I bought was trick daddys thug matrimony. I spends my money else where. If you are offended by things like this, one way to show your protest is to stop strong them. I don’t even listen to the radio stations anymore. I refuse to get sucked in to this self hate our whatever they got going on. Money talks, you know the rest.

This casting call is representative of the self hatred, the lack of knowledge of our history, and sheer ignorance of how the “blight” skin evolved. These folk are far removed from the violence history of the rape of innocent black women and children by white men. After the rapes, lynching of black men and women, killing of innocent children, and denial of Blacks humanity, some Blacks today have the audacity to honor the results of white folks dastardly deeds. Only fools, the ignorant, and imbecilic will honor the very thing that seeks to annihilate himself. While we cannot erase the damage done to us, we do not need to use color as a value issue.

Why should this be a shock and surprise. Skin-tone references are made overtly and subliminally in the [entertainment] industry every waking minute, reinforcing the notion that lighter is better. Now is not the time to be upset. The time to be upset is yesterday.

I’m not going to see the movie so I am not upset or surprise by what the requirements are. Dre and Ice Cube could have changed the descriptions but they wanna make money. FUNNY, Ice Cubes wife is not a light skinned, long haired woman and Dr Dre is married to a Euro so I am curious to know if they are going to honestly represent them or just type cast.

Logic Thinking only 15% or the color ancestors of former slaves have this kinds of thinking. We make up 13.77% of United State pouplation. So many of us can’t accept that we are a sick race of people. The foolishness is not colorism, but the ways 85% of us think in our daily lives. The most educated of us can’t decipher that calling ourselves black is an adjective describe something. we called ourselves negros, “N” word, color and now some of us want to be African Americans. Some of us have never taken a DNA test to find out what DNA we have in us. Our women walking around looking like something in a horror movie with someone hair on their heads. Most of the males in our communities have mental problems from self hate. I will not leave the females out of this picture, They are mentally ill too. you wonder why other enthic groups hate you and 75% of us like to make excuses for our people. Listen how silly you sounds sometimes; “if the kids had a father in the house they could teach them right from wrong.” You tell me so call black folks how does that sound to an intelligence people. When I type black in lower case that means that it is not a name for a race neither is white. Whites skin colors are not white, therefore; they are ignorant too. May my people find the will to find PEACE.I am a woman to the females.

As a race we’ve been brainwashed into believing that white is perfection. And that the closer you can get to white is more acceptable, than being black. So many black celebs have bleached their skin: Halle Berry, Diana Ross, Iman, etc. Instead of praising these celebs, we should shame them!

I was going to see the movie but after I read the ignorance I decided not to go. I am sick and tired of this Garbage. I went on a campaign and told everyone I know not to see this movie. Hit these idiots in their pocket. We need to demand respect. I do not feel we should be attacking Beyonce. Let the sister make her paper her way. It is not her fault that these ignorant people used her name. As a dark skinned sister I feel like we need to stop the hatred. There are many beautiful dark skinned women but the LYNCH papers are alive and well.

SMH…I read almost all the responses. Like Obama always says “Dont boo, vote!” I said that to advise everyone, if you don’t like something, dont buy, dont watch, dont involve yourself. It is true that dark skinned women were the white mans preference to rape and breed. Some of these white men were obsessed with the dark skin, back in the days, but it was always hidden. The shame of what happened back then still follows this generation. No one wants to be reminded of that. This is why a lot of dark skinned women may have problems. Didn’t anyone see “12 years of slave?” Then you understand what I am saying. If you didn’t, please do. There is a message there, and the writer has done a great job of reminding us of true happenings. A real and true woman comes from within. Women of all races have their hair weaved and wear wigs. It is called an enhancement. Beyonce and most artists are at the top of the list! Just because you want to enhance yourself doesn’t mean you are not real or ghetto. It is the character of a woman that defines whether she is ghetto. This can be any race. Dont believe? Do some travel and go into other countries and explore the ghetto everywhere. There is no one complexion greater than the other. We can breathe better remembering this. Its always how you present yourself. Love, pray, peace all.

It aint about color. Look at somolian wmm and ethopian wmn and serra leone wmn even Nigerian wmn their features is delicate; smaller slimmer nose round or heartshaped face and they are the ones who get the modeling contracts in this country. Now look at wmn from uganda sorry but their features are big and rough lookin. Why we wont admit that theres rough lookin wmn in our race. Casting fukked up when they made it about color. They should have said light and dark D girls both light and dark can look rough.
