When Sudanese-born Meriam Ibrahim was released from prison along with her one-month-old baby girl last month, after international outcry of the death sentence hanging over her head, she attempted to leave the country, but was arrested again before being released.

Although Ibrahim, who was imprisoned for converting to Catholicism and marrying a non-Muslim, was now out of prison, she was still not out of the woods. She spent several weeks at the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum until she was finally given permission to leave the country this week.

Previous to her imprisonment, Ibrahim had been given four days to convert to Islam on the threat of giving up her life if she did not. When she stubbornly refused, Islamic Judge, Abbas Khalifa sentenced her to 100 lashes and death by hanging, but deferred the sentence until after her baby was born and she had nursed it for two years.
