A lot of people don’t know that Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith did a really interesting interview with President Barack Obama.  During the interview, Smith starts off by admitting that he’s nervous and later even said that he was “terrified” during the interview.  The interview is interesting to see, and seems to provide some insights into President Obama’s points of view.

The two start off talking about religious tolerance and freedom and the idea of “expanding your moral imagination.”  The president says that a good person is one who tries to see the world through the eyes of another person, even if they have a point of view that differs from your own.

Here is an excerpt:

Will Smith:                Well thank you for doing this. This is a fantastic. We’re really excited. This is the first time I’ve been nervous in front of a camera in a long time, in a long … just think back to it, Prince of Bel Air, man. So the first thing really struck me in your speech. There was a line … in my old school hip hop days I would have been biting your lyrics on this one, but you talked about expanding our moral imagination.

Barack Obama:         Right.

Will Smith:                That just really struck me. Would you elaborate on that idea

Barack Obama:         Well, you know when you think about what’s happening in the world, on the one hand it’s shrinking. We see the internet, live feeds and You Tube and that means that nobody around the world should be a stranger. That should be bringing us closer together because it should remind us that we’re all fundamentally the same in terms of our aspirations, our hopes, our love for our children; but it’s [disorient 01:04]. So, a lot of people pull back into their own specific identities, their race, their tribe, their religion; and that’s a dangerous thing because it can splinter people and cause conflict and people can decide that because this person doesn’t worship the same God or doesn’t look like me, then I don’t have to have the same consideration for them. There are a whole host of ways in which that can lead them to conflict and so one of the critical ingredients of any effort for peace is my ability to stand in your shoes, to see through your eyes, to constantly imagine, what’s it like being a mother in Bangladesh right now, and if …

I don’t see the point in posting this. Will is trying very hard to look intelligent and Jada is looking like a bobble head doll. Must be a slow day for news.

It is just too bad we always want to pull that crab that has almost gotten out of the bucket back down in it again. Maybe there was a slow day for news, but you got to give Will credit for even trying to interview the President of the US with little known knowledge or skills as reporter. Could you pull that off? We need to start encouraging each other more, weather you mop floors and clean toilets give that person some encouragement. Say something half way positive…GBY
