Man Convicted of Espionage is “Transitioning” into a Woman at Tax Payer’s Expense

Bradley Manning, the U.S. Army soldier who changed his name to Chelsea and was convicted of espionage after releasing the largest set of classified documents ever leaked, has been approved for hormone therapy while he’s still serving time. He was convicted in July 2013.

The 27-year-old native of Crescent, Oklahoma applied for the therapy to help his transition to a woman while at the Army’s Fort Leavenworth prison in Kansas, according to USA Today. The decision is the first of its kind for the Army in what some believe to be a change of thought about transgender servicemen. Manning is still classed as a soldier while he is serving his time.

According to USA Today, the commandant of Fort Leavenworth, Col. Erica Nelson, wrote in a memo on Feb. 5 that he believed the requested hormone treatment was medically appropriate and necessary. He continued that after “weighing all associated safety and security risks presented, I approve adding hormone treatment to Inmate Manning’s treatment plan.”

After sending classified documents to the anti-secrecy website WikiLeaks, Manning was found guilty of espionage and other offenses and sentenced to 35 years in an Army prison. He will be eligible for parole in about seven years, according to reports.
