Young Mother Allegedly Burned Infant Daughter In the Middle of the Street

When residents of Pemberton Township, New Jersey saw 22-year-old Hyphernkemberly Dorvilier burning something in the street, they just thought it was her way of getting rid of garbage, but it turned out that she had set fire to her own baby girl.
The incident happened in Burlington County on Friday evening at around 11 p.m., according to the New York Daily News. Dorvilier stands accused of pouring a flammable liquid on her infant child, then setting her on fire in the middle of Simontown Road. She has been charged with one count of infant murder.
Dave Joseph, who lives nearby, told local television station CBS Philly that he went out to investigate a fire in the road after he saw it from his window. He adds that he never dreamed that it would turn out to be a child, they just thought it was someone burning trash.
When neighbors discovered what Dorvilier had done, they immediately called the police. However, although the unnamed infant was airlifted to St. Christopher’s Hospital, Philadelphia, she died two hours later from her injuries, according to reports.
Dorvilier, whose demeanor was calm, knew exactly what she was doing, according to Joseph. He adds that she later used a water bottle to douse the flames and tried to claim she was burning dog waste.
Joseph went on to say that his wife heard the baby scream and that’s when they realized something was terribly wrong. He added that Dorvilier tried to make a run for it as he approached her, but he tackled her to the ground and that’s when they made the horrifying discovery.
According to the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office, the infant had been doused with an accelerant prior to being set ablaze. Dorvilier was taken into custody at the scene and she remains in Burlington County Corrections and Work Release Center on a bail of $500,000. An autopsy on the infant will be performed by Burlington County Medical Examiner Dr. Ian Hood.
According to reports, neighbors set up a small memorial on Saturday night at the scene of the crime for the child they never got the chance to know.
Burlington County Prosecutors office now has the unpleasant task of figuring out exactly what happened and why such a tragedy took place.
