News Anchor Quits After Berating “Young Black Men Without Fathers”
Sean Bergin, a reporter from News 12 in New Jersey, was suspended over comments he made on Sunday about fatherless black men during a news report. Bergin now says he doesn’t plan on returning to his job after learning that his news segments will be reduced to once per week.
The controversy stemmed from Bergin’s reporting on slain police officer Melvin Santiago. During the Sunday segment, Bergin interviewed the widow of a black man who gunned down Santiago and was killed by other officers responding to the scene.
Widow Angelique Campbell told Bergin that Lawrence Campbell didn’t go far enough and should’ve killed more officers. She later apologized.
Bergin responded to complaints by viewers as “understandable” adding, “We decided to air it because it’s important to shine a light on the anti-cop mentality that has so contaminated America’s inner cities.”

Nothing like making broad-ass statements about something this man knows nothing about. He’s basically saying that all black men should be assumed to be future/current criminals. Sounds like he’s for preemptive measures to be made against black males.

So are fatherless homes the cause for crime? When kids are he!! Bent on being criminals, who is in the home doesn’t matter. At a point in the developmental stages of teens or young adults, it is the peer group who has the most influence over the individual. And at that point, it doesn’t matter if there are 2 parents and a host of extended family in the home.

These were not my words; but I concur..
When white people kill we never hear any talk about some sort of white pathology. He’s talking about doing the right thing. This racist coward wouldn’t know the right thing if it bit him on the azz. White American men who commit the vast majority of crime are never portrayed as one monolithic group. I understand why this black mother said what she did. Cops get away with murdering black males with impunity. Not to mention filing false charges on them to wrongfully lock them up. The so call good cops maintain a no snitch mentality to protect the criminal cops. There is never any outrage over that by white mainstream media. But when cops get killed or injured they are automatically portrayed as a hero. Cops today are no better than the criminals on the street. I have no more or less empathy for cops being killed than I do for the average citizen. I’m sure some right wing racist media outlet will jump at the chance to give this POS a job. Sounds to me like these fatherless black males should take a look at racist white reporters and stop looking at themselves as the enemy.

Don’t create anything you can’t afford. Doesn’t matter if it’s a child or a court case. Some Black leave their children but that small group of men doesn’t represent all Black men. Mr. Reporter, check your neighborhood I’m sure some men are missing too.

He did not berate anyone. He told the truth and some can not handle it. Look at our youth jails, regular jails, and prisons. Ask those “allege” Black boys and men about their upbringing. Most are saying if they had a father in the house, they think their circumstances would have been different. The Black men are saying if I was their for my son, he would not be in this position. Take off the blinders and have a real discussion about this. We are failing our own communities and passing blame and responsibility to areas we personally have control over. I can cite many examples of going in and trying to help our own community only to get ridiculed by single mothers and young men. All the so called praying folks are doing is not amounting to anything if you do not get off your ass and do something productive. Sitting there blaming the white man, the prison system, the school system and everyone else but yourself make you the foolish one. What he said, whether opinion or fact is a discussion no simple minded black person wants to talk about. They would rather pass the blame.

No one said or implied “all” fatherless households or all Black households. Look in your neighborhood. Hell, look at the July 4th weekend in Chicago. 82 folks shot! How many were white on black crime? How many were black on white crime, and now for the real question, how many were black on black crime? This is problematic in most urban areas. Not to say it is only in our community, but most of it is. And what are we doing about it…no snitch rule, pray, passed the hat to pay for the funeral, and start the cycle all over again. That reporter was correct in his analogy. Homes with children without two parents, namely the father, the children are more inclined to commit crimes. Don’t believe me, just watch Lock up, Scared Straight, and whatever other prison related program. Take off the blinders!

We are 13% of the population and our crime rate off the chain. Most blkmn in prison born to single mothers. Most youth in juvie born to single mothers. Most drug dealers thugs gang members born to single mothers. Most girls that get pregnant born to single mothers. Most kids that drop outta HS born to single mothers. Most sons of single mothers will become single fathers and most girls born to single mothers will be single mothers. 72% oow birthrate. Only 28% of blk babies born in marriage. @ George…don’t have blinders but I don’t think that it is all based on fatherless homes. I think it is a combination of multiple factors- age of parent(s), family legacy of education and work, generational values to name a few.

Hmmm…I believe there are other factors why whites are doing better than Blacks. Perhaps review what Boyce posted about Reconstruction Era and subsequent attacks on Black community -overt and covert- that have had a part in our demise. I am not saying things aren’t so..,.I am not saying that some Black folks aren’t trifiling as h€ll.. How do we reel things back in…or is it too late and it is every man for himself??

What troubles me the most is that when white males shoot up schools, public bombings, molest little boys at prostegious colleges, their excuse is mental illness. Conversely, when black males commit crimes, like the one the news reporter is referring too, they ALWAYS suggest the root to thier behavior is connected to growing up in fatherless homes. In hindsight, this is the only way that white media can keep the myth alive about brothers not playing a consistent and meaningful role in the lives of their children. So, whenever I hear racial and emotionally charged comments like the one the reporter said, I am immediately reminded of the words passionately expressed by Flava Flav, “DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE!”

It’s sad but true,black young men without fathers in the home seem to have a harder time adjusting than the ones with a responsible male figure present in the home. I,m a living example and my son is living proof. We as a race should own up to the problem. I wish our young black women would think twice about bringing more fatherless young men into this sad situation that we are in. Father of 5 grandfather of 9 greatgrandfather of 3. Still married and in my kids lives and they are doing great. Thank God Drichman1
