You know I can’t imagine looking white but in reality being half black, it must be very difficult to deal with, especially in this Trump era we are in. I actually have people in my family that are mixed and can pass, and even though I never talked to them personally about how their look affects their life experiences, I know it’s not easy at times. Some of those people in my family never even really come around much as they are living in the “white world” while there are others that do, it really depends on how a person is raised ultimately anyway. I can tell you who was definitely raised right though-Lionel Richie’s biological daughter Sofia. Even though Sofia doesn’t have dark skin, she is not running from her blackness, and is even speaking out about people who say racist things around her thinking she is not Black.

Sofia has made a name for herself in the fashion industry and working in the fashion industry she hears her fair share of racist banter and she doesn’t like it, or tolerate it.

“I’m very light, so some people don’t really know that I’m black,” Sofia Richie, 18, said in an interview with Complex. “I’ve been in situations where people will say something kind of racist, and I’ll step in and they’ll be like, ‘Oh, well, you’re light.’”

She said those statements might cause her to go off.

“‘That still doesn’t cut it, buddy,’” she responded. “‘It’s 2016—you better get your [s–t] together before you get slapped out here.’”

Sofia realizes that as the daughter of a famous singer that all eyes are on her, but said her faith in God keeps her grounded, especially when it comes to relationships.

“One of the key factors of life is love, and the key factor of God is love, so having that understanding is really important in a relationship,” she explained. “Having someone that genuinely respects you and understands your life and is open to hearing about your life is really cool. Having someone to just open up to and talk to when [s–t] is bad and when [s–t] is great.”

Richie also discussed her possible music career but said she doesn’t want to use her father’s name as a crutch.

“I wanted to have a music career for a long time. Music is my life, and it speaks to me—Rihanna, a lot of Frank Ocean, I love Shawn Mendes!” she said. “I just want to have my own direction and be free with it. I don’t want anyone to have a hold on me because of my dad.”

Keep fighting that good fight Sofia! We need more people that look like you to break down the barriers of racism. We need racist white people to be shocked when you tell them your black and then put them in their place. You know with more and more people being born that look like Sofia and Halle Berry’s kids, Tamera Mowry’s kids and Kendra Wilkson’s kids who can pass for white, it makes you think what is white anymore and what will be considered “white” 50 years from now? Many of these white people out here are in fact mixed with black and you would never even know it.
