Cam Newton Gets Benched Over Dress Code Violation… Really?

By  |

NFL baller Cam Newton was fashionably late for Sunday night’s game.

The Panthers said that Newton was allegedly benched at the start of the game against the Seahawks simply because he’d chosen not to wear a necktie on their team flight from San Jose, California, all the way to Seattle.

“I didn’t follow dress code, and Coach told me I wasn’t going to start. I stand by his decision,” Newton told reporters afterward.

Ron Rivera, the California coach, claimed that he’d decided to treat Newton just “like I do all the other players on the team, and he didn’t start.”

Cam Newton wore neon cleats during the game (l.) but black-and-blue cleats during warmups.

Derek Anderson, however, did start and he’d also intercepted on the first play. Things seemed to go downhill from there, as the Panthers lost 40-7.

Newton has been known to wear some goofy looking outfits and for this game he’d worn a turtleneck and overcoat – along with another one of those hats. He said that he’d been offered a few chances to avoid any punishment, however, admits that he couldn’t wear a tie with his choice of attire for that day.

“I felt like I wore a similar outfit to this before and nothing was said,” Newton added. “But (Rivera) has rules in place, and I have to abide by them. No person is greater than the next person.”
