Zeta Phi Beta Are Sisters to Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity; Interesting Facts About the Sisterhood

Zeta Phi Beta’s existence came about because Charles Robert Samuel Taylor of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity suggested to Arizona Cleaver the idea of having a female counterpart or a sister organization of their fraternity. Cleaver and four other ladies agreed to pursue the concept and, with the necessary zeal and effort came the birth of the sorority.  More about the Zetas below:

  1. The Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was founded in Jan. 16, 1920 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. by a number of college women they now call The Five Pearls of Zeta Phi Beta, namely: Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie, and Pearl Anna Neal.
  1. Members of the organization are also called ‘Zetas’ or ‘Sisters of the Dove,’ as the sisterhood’s official symbol is the white dove.
  1. Zetas’ official colors are royal blue and white, and their official flower is a white rose. The sisterhood’s official newsletter is called the Archon, a Greek word which means ‘ruler’ or ‘lord’.
  1. Zeta Phi Beta was the first sorority to be formally tied up with a fraternity (Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.).

The sorority was the pioneer among the National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations to put up a headquarter to be the center for planning and managing the various programs and activities they conducted. In 2005, they spent $2 million for the renovation of the building, located in Washington, D.C., which had been their headquarters since 1959.
  1. Located in Monrovia, Liberia, a Zetas chapter was established in 1948, making the sorority the pioneer organization to have a chapter on the African continent.

Zeta Phi Beta is a vast organization with over 100,000 members clustered in more than 850 chapters spread throughout different continents and regions such as the U.S.A, Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and Asia. Some of the countries include: Japan, Korea, Haiti, Jamaica, Barbados, the Virgin Islands, the U.S., and more.
  1. The sisterhood is also the pioneer in setting up subsidiary or auxiliary groups. Among them are the Amicae group (college women who do not have degrees yet), Archonettes (young ladies ranging between ages 14-18), Amicettes (girls who are 9 to 13 years of age), Pearlettes (girls of ages 4 to 8), and the Zeta Male Network (organizations that have male members who provide support to the sisterhood).
  1. The Zetas officially teamed up with Stevie Wonder for a program he was involved in to gather toys he needed for his House Full of Benefit Concert, which he conducts yearly. No less than full participation from the Zetas was delivered, mobilizing all 850 chapters, which endeavored to accumulate toys for the cause.

  1. In 2001, the Sisters of the Dove had been accorded with an NGO (Non-Governmental Organization) status with the UN (United Nations), and in 2013, the sisterhood topped all participants in the March for Babies Challenge, having accumulated a total of over $306,000 for the cause.
