According the Huffington Post, First Lady Michelle Obama has banished mac and cheese from the White House menu.

One of Mrs. Obama’s first orders of business when she and the First Family moved into the White House was to take “boxed macaroni and cheese” from the presidential family menu.  The first lady told her daughter that “cheese dust” is not real food, and that neither one of them will be partaking in that dish, no matter how much they might enjoy it.

The first lady is not opposed to macaroni and cheese in itself.  Her issue is with processed foods.   After learning that Malia and Sasha liked the boxed meal, the White House chef told the the concerned mom how and why the box version of that dish was not healthy.  It didn’t take much to convince the First Lady that the food item was not a good choice for her girls.  She quickly tossed it from their dinner options.

“My kids loved the macaroni and cheese in a box. And [Sam] said, if it’s not real food then we’re not going to do it. If we want macaroni and cheese, we’ll cook it with real milk and real cheese. He said, there’s nothing wrong with mac and cheese, but it’s got to be real food.”

The chef demonstrated to the Malia, the oldest daughter to President Barack Obama and the First Lady, the difference in real cheese and processed cheese.  He gave the young girl a challenge to process a block of cheese to “cheese dust.”

“So my oldest daughter [Malia], who was probably 8 at the time, he took a block of cheese and he said, if you can cut this cheese up into the powder that is the cheese of the boxed macaroni and cheese, then we’ll use it,” Mrs. Obama began. “She sat there for 30 minutes trying to pulverize a block of cheese into dust. I mean, she was really focused on it, and it just didn’t work, so she had to give up. And from then on, we stopped eating macaroni and cheese out of a box, because cheese dust is not food, as was the moral of that story.”

Apparently, the girls were not the first kids in the White House to like boxed mac and cheese.  Former First Daughter Chelsea Clinton loved the processed dish.  And according to the presidential chef, Clinton wasn’t as impressionable as the Obama girls when he tried to persuade her not to eat the processed cheesy dish.  He said that Chelsea had a very “narrow idea of what she wanted to eat.”

First Lady Obama says that dinners should be nutritious and a time for families to bond and connect.  So, despite the very hectic schedules the President and First Lady have, the two make it a point to join their daughters for dinner most evenings.

“We’ve found that we’ve been able to have dinner every… almost every night together, between 6:30 and 7:00,” revealed the FLOTUS. “We have a bigger table and somebody else is doing the cooking, but the conversation and the mood and the tone are still the same. It’s our most important time of the day.”
