Whitney Houston’s Family Blasts Angela Bassett’s Biopic

Earlier this month, Whitney Houston’s family snubbed Angela Bassett’s Houston moviepremiere of the biopic about the singer’s life, and now the mega-singer’s relatives are speaking out.

When Angela Bassett, director of “Whitney”, was asked about the slight, she said “sometimes to be silent is the greatest gift”, but it seems that the family’s gift has now been revoked.

According to Deadline, the singer’s estate trashed the movie through a public statement.

“I say this to all Whitney’s family, friends and fan base: If you watch this movie, watch it knowing that Lifetime is notorious for making bad biopics of deceased celebrities and brace yourself for the worst,” wrote Pat Houston, the singer’s sister-in-law and president of the Whitney Houston Estate.

“Never would Whitney allow her story to be told by an inexperienced team and how naive of anyone to think otherwise, unless you’re caught up in illusions of grandeur that you can just do anything and people will accept it,” she said. “This made for TV movie is certainly not a trailer to Whitney’s life story.”

When asked about the family snubbing the biopic’s premiere, which debuts on January 17, Oscar nominated actress Angela Bassett said she understood the family’s decision not to get involved.

“And it was the family’s choice and decision, because of what they want to do and whatever their desires or their plans are, not to be involved in this one,” Bassett said, reported the New York Times. “But they didn’t have anything negative to say about it. You know, sometimes to be silent is the greatest gift.”

Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina, was already angry at Bassett for not casting her to play the role of her mom in the movie, but Bassett said she had good reason for the choice.

“No, I did not think about that. I did not think about casting her,” she admitted. “And probably for a number of reasons, you know. One being that she’s not an actress. I know she’s acted here and there. I know she’s been on their family’s reality show, but she’s not an actress and acting is a craft.”
