When Deron Puro was contacted about his two sons making racist remarks on Snapchat to Brad Knudson’s adopted African-American daughter, he probably didn’t think that insulting the distraught father would cost him his job. However, after a YouTube video of the exchange between the two men and the remarks made by Puro’s children went viral, the financial firm who employed Puro as an independent contractor confirmed he no longer works there.

The incident began when Knudson’s black, adopted daughter, Diedra, was in her home in Prior Lake, Minnesota sending Snapchats to some of her friends from school. Reportedly, Puro’s sons started sending her racist remarks about her being a “n*gger.”

Dierdra told her father, who tried unsuccessfully to reach the boys’ parents to complain about the matter. He went to the police, who helped him contact Puro by phone. Knudson believed that he and the other parents could successfully resolve the problem, but was shocked to hear what the father of the boys had to say.

Listening to the YouTube video that features the Snapchats of the children and a voicemail from Puro, it can be clearly heard that the father holds the same racist views as his sons. While Puro’s children had called Dierdra a “slut” and “n*gger,” their father called her father a “n*gger lover” and a “f*g.”

At the start of the video, Knudson describes how he and his wife, Wendy, were fortunate enough to adopt a beautiful, African-American daughter 11 years ago. He adds that over the years, they had dealt with some racism, such as people staring at them when their daughter called them mom or dad, but since it was aimed at the parents, their daughter didn’t suffer too much.

That all changed on New Year’s Eve when his daughter began to receive racist remarks from a set of twins from Prior Lake High School, said Knudson. He adds that although he and his wife missed the first few Snapchats, they caught the fourth one which called Dierdra “such a slut,” “n*gger,” and a “fat a** b*tch.”

Knudson then describes in the video how he called Puro to voice his complaint, but all he got in reply was language that was apparently commonly used around his house. Following this, Knudson then plays the voicemail he received from Puro, which sounded like this: “Yeah, Brad, tides have turned, huh? I guess you’re n***** lover. Call me back.”

Knudson did call Puro back, and he told the vulgar dad that he planned to upload their correspondence on YouTube. Apparently, Puro thought nothing of it and told him to do so if he wished.

According to assistant superintendent Jeff Holmberg, as soon as the school district learned about the video, they immediately launched an investigation into the matter.

But after the dedicated dad posted the video, he discovered that his daughter was not as innocent in the situation as he had thought.  Knudson responded:

“I would like to thank everyone for their support. I just found out our daughter did not take this issue as seriously as Wendy and I. The n word is something I was taught at a very young age was not appropriate. You hear nowadays a lot of songs by People of all color use this word. You also see videos that they use this word. I have never liked it I’ve always thought it was inappropriate that they used it. I have now found out that my daughter during the WCCO interview decided to use Snapchat and send people videos of her thinking that this was a game and it was funny and she actually uses the N-word twice. Regardless of your skin color I and my wife do not tolerate this word our daughter is going to be reprimanded in an appropriate manner. I am extremely saddened and disappointed because of this video she has discredited the message that we wanted to convey. I hope that this does not stop our efforts to highlight the issues that still remain regarding bully and the effects it has on children.”
