Waiting to Exhale Sequel is “dead in the water”

Author Terry McMillan has killed off any hopes of seeing a sequel to her hit “Waiting to Exhale” saying “it’s dead in the water”. McMillan had been working on the project since FOX bought the rights to the sequel in 2010. It was just two years later when one of the stars of the original movie—Whitney Houston died unexpectedly.

McMillan says when Houston died, so did any real hope of a sequel. The best-selling author says, “It’s been horrible since Whitney [Houston] passed away for a whole lot of reasons. FOX wanted to basically eliminate that character altogether from the story. How they thought that was going to work, I don’t know.”

Once it was clear that the character Houston played of Savannah Jackson could not be written out of “Exhale 2” FOX began tossing out possible actresses to recast the role. A FOX exec says they floated Oprah Winfrey’s name as a potential replacement, but never really approached her. McMillan says that she thought casting a new actress was plausible, but she had her own ideas about who could replace Houston, “As much as I loved Whitney and I loved her in that role…any time they can have seven different 007s, as iconic as Whitney was and still was, it was a role.
