Obama’s Attorney General Nominee Gets Overwhelming Support from Delta Sigma Theta

This week, members of Delta Sigma Theta gathered in Washington, D.C. to demonstrate their support for New York Attorney Loretta Lynch, President Barack Obama’s nominee for Attorney General of the United States of America. The ladies, who were dressed in their signature colors, crimson and cream, sat in the audience as their sorority sister was grilled by members of the Senate Judiciary Committee.

While the members of the committee threw fiery darts at Lynch, hoping to punch holes in any of her values, beliefs, and ethics, the Harvard grad remained poised and calm as she eloquently answered each question. Members of the committee asked Lynch about the legalization of marijuana, polygamy, and water boarding used as interrogation techniques, among other topics. Although many of the members of the committee were being downright snarky towards Lynch, she remained unwavered by their remarks.

Lynch’s father sat in the audience in the front row to show his support of his daughter, who will be the first African American woman to serve as Attorney General in the U.S. if she is confirmed by the Senate.

Many of those who are in outright opposition of Lynch being appointed were also present in the audience.

Lynch is a charter member of Harvard University’s Delta Sigma Theta chapter. She and Dr. Sharon Malone MD, wife of Attorney General Eric Holder, pledged together in 1980, along with eleven other young ladies. The two women would graduate the following year and begin their impressive careers in law and medicine.

Lynch’s sorority sisters were in attendance wearing beautiful red and crimson suits, making it clear who and what they were in support of. There is no doubt that Lynch drew courage from her father and sorority sisters.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. was founded in 1913 at Howard University by twenty-two young ladies. The organization boasts as being the second African American sorority to form in the history of the United States.

Loretta Lynch will not be the first member of Delta to be a high-ranking member of D.C. politics. Congresswomen Shirley Chisolm and Barbara Jordon were both members of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
