Nicki Minaj’s ex-boyfriend, Safaree Samuels, has broken his silence about how and why the couple’s relationship ultimately didn’t make it. For a while, the break up was on the tip of the media’s tongue and even got a little negative on social media  but no one really knew what was behind the split.

During an interview with Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club radio show, Samuels didn’t hold back when the topic of his break up with the rapper came up.

It was not too clear who ended it but Samuels told the radio show host,

“I walked away. I’m not going to say I broke up, but I’m the one who walked away. I packed up my stuff and I left.”

According to Samuels, “the respect wasn’t there”. He went on to say that everyone who was around her worked for her. He said,

“So it got the point where it was like, I’m your man. I’m who you go to sleep with every night. I’m who you wake up with every morning. And it got to the point where I was being treated like an employee, instead of like her man.”

Around mid December last year, Samuels and Minaj got into a rather nasty back-and-forth on Twitter so he adressed it and emphasized that no matter what happened privately between him and the rapper, he would never “do anything publicly to try to pull her down”.  He stressed that their private battles were exactly that, private,

“Whatever happens between me and her one on one is what it is, that’s personal. I would never put that out there.”

It seemed that even though Samuels was opening up, he was still very careful about what he was saying and he tried very hard not to say anything damaging. He said,

“I could be out here telling a million stories and doing cornball s–t, but I’m not gonna do that and I never plan on doing that. I just think it’s crazy for her to come out now and try to pull me down and try to say I’m corny. I don’t care who you with, who you with don’t mean nothing to me. I want you to move on, because I’m moving on. I walked away from the situation.”

It seems that Minaj has moved on. The rumor mill is already pairing her up with Meek Mill after she was seen with him publicly, on several occasions. The rapper has denied that she is dating Meek Mill but Samuels still said that they had his blessing.

“If that’s who she decides to move on with, it is what it is. I’m not mad, I’m not bitter because if I wanted to make it work, I could’ve made it work… He don’t owe me nothing. He’s not the childhood friend I grew up with.”

Safaree also talked a little about Nicki’s raps, making it clear that not all of it was just her work. According to him, she didn’t do it all by herself, saying,

“All I’m saying is this is something me and her did together. That doesn’t take away from what she’s done. She’s at the top of her league.”

It looks like the now broken up couple really cared about each other and it is refreshing to see people go their separate ways and still be able to wish each other well and talk about their experience without dragging each other’s names through the mud.
