Mother is shocked by what her son’s killer says in court
By Nigel Boys
While everyone expected some kind of closure at this week’s sentencing of Fredrick Young and Felando Hunter after being accused of murdering two Michigan teenagers in July 2012, what the family of the victims did not expect was what one of the convicted murderers had to say.
The two convicts were previously found guilty of the robbing, torture and murder of Jourdan Bobbish, 17, and his friend Jacob Kudla, 18, who had approached the men to try and buy drugs.
Before Wayne County Circuit Judge Dalton Roberson handed down mandatory life sentences for Hunter, 24, and Young, 26, without the possibility of parole, he the victim’s family a chance to be heard, along with a statement from the convicted.
“Everything just aches and it’s just a totally senseless crime,” said Jourdan’s father, Mike Bobbish. “And how you could march someone out in the middle of a field and execute them - we’re not a third world country. Sometimes I wish it did happen in a third world country because it would be a lot different outcome of this whole thing.”
Jacob’s mother, Virgie Kudla, spoke next. “Not only did the defendant take away my son’s future, he took away my future - my future as a mother - my future as a grandmother,” she said.
Jourdan’s mother, Carrie Bobbish, added “I have sorrow in my heart, soul and every fiber of my being today and I will carry that with me for the rest of my life here on earth.”
Judge Roberson then gave Young the chance to speak up for himself, and most supposed that he would apologize to his victims’ families. However, what he said left just about everyone stunned.
“I’d like to say sorry to the families of Aiyanna Jones, Michael Brown, Eric Garner,” Young said. “And I want to apologize to them for not being able to get justice for their loved ones who was murdered in cold blood - and in respect for the peaceful protest, I want to say hands up don’t shoot. Black lives matter - that’s it your honor.”
However, the reaction of Carrie Bobbish was also not one most people would have expected. After stating that she knew her son would want her to forgive his murderers, because that’s how he was, she told his murderers that she would pray for their forgiveness on behalf of herself and Jourdan.
Virgie Kudla also said “No matter what sentence the court imposes today, these defendants will have to answer to God.” She continued, “God’s got this - thank you for letting me speak.”
Hunter, who is already serving life sentences in two unrelated murders, declined to say anything at the sentencing.
