Suicide is never an easy subject to discuss, and it makes it even more difficult to talk about when it is currently claiming young lives on an unfortunate daily basis. There are more children and young adults dealing with depression than we would like to believe. Life just is not the same for the younger generations, and it is hard for them to freely be themselves in a society that wants to mold everyone into what it wants them to be rather than allowing them to flourish into who they were really meant to be.

This societal idea is even harder for the Lesbian Gay Bi-Sexual Transgender (LGBT) community because they receive a large amount of discrimination simply for being different. The weight of having to hide and/or be ashamed of who you are becomes too heavy for some and, without enough support, these individuals sometimes resort to suicide. At least, that is what 16-year-old Leelah Alcorn resorted to.

Alcorn’s death went viral, so much that “Orange is the New Black” star Laverne Cox took to Twitter to mourn her death.
