$ex: What We’re Obviously Not Telling Our Daughters Often and Early Enough

When it comes to talking to our young girls about $ex, many parents miss the mark. Even with good intentions, some parents are not giving young girls the right  information at the right time. Below are three things we need to teach young girls:

A visit to the clinic is a great date

According to the CDC,

“African Americans have the most severe burden of HIV of all racial/ethnic groups in the United States. Compared with other races and ethnicities, African Americans account for a higher proportion of new HIV infections, those living with HIV, and those never diagnosed with AIDS.”

Young women and girls should be encouraged to know their status and to also know the status of anyone they date. If a young man won’t go to the clinic, let’s teach our girls that this means potential trouble.

Having his baby won’t keep him around

Many women are angry and bitter that the man (or men) who impregnated them didn’t stick around after he heard there was a baby on the way. Let’s teach our young women to always use protection, even if her boyfriend insists otherwise. We should teach them that the responsibility of protecting themselves and their babies from fatherless homes starts with being responsible about birth control and who they date.

You need a man

The line that many women spit out comfortably about not needing a man is both inaccurate and unnecessary. Most children who grow up in poverty did so because they grew up without a responsible father in the home. Poverty isn’t the only problem; children who grow up without their father in the home will be more likely to drop out of school, fall pregnant as teenagers (or make girls pregnant in their teens) and also either be the victims of crimes of be the perpetrators of violence and crimes.

$ex is so much more than just responding to an attraction to someone. It has many implications and we need to teach young girls what it means to be $exually active and how they can make good decisions and protect themselves from bad choices and irreversible, horrible life decisions.
