David Oyelowo Reveals God Told Him That He Would Play Dr. King 7 Years Ago

To play Martin Luther King Jr. is no doubt, the role of a life time for any black actor. But, for rising star David Oyelowo this is more than a role, it’s a calling.

The “Selma” star says from the time he read the first script for the movie in 2007, “ I felt God tell me that I was going to play this role in this film.”

The 38 year-old actor is just one year younger than Dr. King was when he was assassinated a half-century ago. Also like King, Oyelowo is a devout Christian. The odds were against him actually landing the role of King because his English accent (English as in from England) worked against him. But Oyelowo says from the moment he heard God’s voice, he started preparing.

“But I know that voice, it guided me through marriage, through my fatherhood and through my career. So what God didn’t tell me was that it was going to take seven-and-a-half years, but like David in the Bible, like Moses, and like Jesus … they knew their calling early on, and then there was a preparation period. It’s a good thing Oyelowo listened to that voice.
