None of us is immune to sexual assault. Whether you are young or old, rich or poor, African American, Caucasian, Asian, Mexican, or any other race, male or female—we can all be walking targets for the sexually disturbed seeking to assault someone. Maybe you went out for drinks with friends, are walking home, getting into your vehicle, or sitting in the comfort of your own home, it doesn’t matter; a sexual assault can happen at any time. Rest assured, as the victim, it is never your fault.

New Technology

  • Date rape drugs are common among people seeking to sexually assault someone at a club, bar, party, or any activity where you may be drinking. What if there was something to detect that your drink has been tampered with? Thankfully students at North Carolina State University thought about that question. They came up with a nail polish that can detect some of the common date rape drugs like Xanax, Rohypnol and GHB. All you have to do is dip your finger nail in your drink, and if it detects one of the three common drugs it will change colors. An important tip to keep in mind is that there are quite a few date rape drugs out there and this nail polish was designed for only three.  So, be careful.
  • Stiletto has released a pendent for women to keep themselves protected. This fashionable pendent can be worn as a necklace or a bracelet and if you are ever in danger you can double click it and your personal emergency contacts will be notified. Also, this pendent will call 911 and pin point your location right away. The downside to this product, for some, may be the price. The cost is between $179-$349.

Learn How to Protect Yourself

  • When going out with friends, never leave your drink unattended and if for some reason you do, dump it out and get another one.
  • If you know it’s going to be dark when you get into your vehicle, park near a well-lit area. If this is not available, see if security can escort you or get some type of protection, like pepper spray.
  • When at home, lock your windows and doors and get a deterrent like a security system, dog, or automatic lights.
  • Take defense classes, learn how to shoot a gun, and check out the new technology to save yourself from sexual assault.
