The Voice is reporting that teachers at three Free State South African schools have been suspended for referring to black students as monkeys and baboons.  An investigation found that two white principals and a teacher at the school had routinely abused black children by subjecting them to racist and inhumane treatment that including the name calling.  The staff were also found to have referred to the students with a racial slur that is demeaning to black Africans and is banned under South African law.  The investigation was carried out by South Africa’s Human Rights Commission (SAHRC).

The Commission investigated Francois Schoon, who is the principal of the Dr Viljoen Combined School in Bloemfontein, Charles Liversage, who is the principal of Christian de Wet Hoerskool in Dewetsdorp, and Trudy Erasmus, who is a teacher at St Helena Primary School in Welkom.  The Commission reports that the derogatory treatment occurred in May 2013.

Students report that one of the teachers had told them that, “after seeing their ugly face, he adores his dog even more because it is more beautiful than them.”  Students were also told to go back to schools located in their townships because they would never be anything more than chain store workers like their parents.  Students also report that the old South African flag, which was flown under apartheid, was on display in a seventh grade classroom along with a derogatory picture of Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema alongside a monkey.

An investigation is also being carried out by the Department of Education and they will be making a final determination about the permanent fate of the staff when their investigation concludes on August 30.  The schools involved were reportedly used as schools for only white children under the racial segregation of apartheid.
