Dawnn Lewis, aka “Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor,” was a staple on the hit NBC show, “A Different World.” But there’s much more than meets the eye when it comes to this beautiful and talented black woman. Here are a few things you may not know about Dawnn Lewis.

1) Dawnn was born in Brooklyn, NY. She wasn’t just an actress. She was also a singer, known for her role in the 1988 film, “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka.”   She also had a role in “Hanging with Mr. Cooper” during the first season of the show.

2) Lewis wasn’t just a cast member on “A Different World.” She also co-wrote the show’s famous theme song.   She appeared on the first five seasons of the show, from 1987 – 1992.

3) Oddly, her character disappeared during the sixth season with no explanation whatsoever. This was similar to the exit of Chuck Cunningham on Happy Days.

4) Dawnn left “A Different World” to star in “Hanging with Mr. Cooper.” But this didn’t seem to work out for her, since her stint on the show was only one season.   She also performed the theme song for the show, along with Holly Robinson Peete and the group En Vogue.

5) Lewis has been in many TV series, including Futurama and The 10th Kingdom, where she actually played a troll named Blabberwort. She did a great deal more voiceover work in videogames, films and television shows, including “The Cleveland Show.”

6) In 2006, Lewis released her debut CD, “Worth Waiting For.” Lewis released the CD under her own record label, Morning Jewel Music. The title track of her debut album was featured in the Disney movie The Poof Point, where she was also the star.

7) Lewis is on the Hollywood Board of Directors for the Screen Actors Guild, serves as Chairman of its Singers Committee, and was honored with the 2008 Integrity Award from the Los Angeles Women’s Theatre Festival.
