Nina Simone’s Only Child Slams Her, Describes the Singer as a ‘Monster’

Nina Simones only child named LIsa said her mother battled depression and alcoholism and could be a monster.

Nina Simone and Lisa

Reported by Andrew Scot Bolsinger

The troubled life of American singer Nine Simone remains troubled today, more than a decade after her death.

The so-called “high priestess of soul,” who battled depression and alcoholism throughout her life, left behind a lengthy battle for her estate and a biopic movie that has now stalled to be released because of a legal battle surrounding it.

Simone was known for hits My Baby Just Cares For Me, Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood and I Put a Spell on You. Her troubles off the stage were less known, including a “a tortured relationship with her only child, Lisa,” according to a story in the Daily Mail.

“My mother could be a monster,” Simone’s daughter said in a recent interview.

Simone died at the age of 70 in 2003, leaving a large family estate that has been fought over in court for years. Her daughter Lisa was disinherited from the will, according to published reports.

Lisa Simone, who followed her mother into the music business, did so largely without her support, she said, despite enduring her abuse as a child during her erratic childhood. Lisa told reporters that she had 13 governesses by the age of seven and walked out on her mom when she was just 14.

“‘I’d like to think if she had taken two seconds to think about her behavior she would have done things differently but I’m not sure,” Lisa said. “My mother was angry with the world and often the only person around to blame was me.”

Simone’s troubled life is played by Zoe Saldana in the yet-to-released movie, Nina, which, according to published reports, was due to be released in March.

“The release date was postponed when writer and director Cynthia Mort became locked in a protracted legal dispute with the producers,” the Daily Mail reported.

Simone is credited with developing a mix of jazz, gospel, blues, folk and soul to create her signature sound, which she dubbed, “black classical music.”

Her music career took off in the 1950s and ‘60s, and she used her fame to become an outspoken civil rights activist, including writing music about the racism of the time.

Starting in 1970s with her career on the decline, Simone moved with her daughter to places like Barbados, Liberia and Geneva, where she enrolled Lisa in an international boarding school.

Lisa eventually moved back to the U.S., as an engineer in the Air Force.

She quit the military in 1992, at age 29, initially to become a backing singer, performing under the name Simone Kelly.

In 2001, Lisa earned the lead in the Broadway production of Elton John’s musical hit Aida.

Two years later, Simone died from breast cancer.

Lisa sued the estate of her mother and won a judgement in 2006, only to be sued by other family members.

Zoe Saldano looks NOTHING like Nina Simone! I’m so tired of Hollywood hiring bi-racials portray our people. It’s demeaning and ridiculous. Like there are no super-talented black people to play that role!

Not only does the Dominican Zoe Saladna look nothing like Nina Simone. They have Zoe in “Blackface” portraying Nina in the movie. Black people not only fought to sit on the bus, they fought against Blackface as well. It’s ironic that Nina fought for civil rights, only to have Hollywood portray her in “Blackface.”

To be young gifted and Black and in soul pain this is the plight of a lot of us in America. Nina Simone took her pain and put it to song. Let us not judge. We are all in this together. We shall overcome one by one.

We will never know what types of idiocies Nina Simone had to put up with just to make it in the entertainment industry. What we do know is that she was a spokeswoman for equal rights and justice and that she missed out on many opportunities because she stuck to her convictions during the civil rights movement.

Zoe Saladana is black. So before you go off on a rant about bi racial actress “Stealing” role or Hollywood know what your talking about.
And if her daughter were more educated she would understand Nina Simone suffered from mental illness.
Finally, if Ms. Simone was so horrible then why sue for her portion? She did not write on lyric or play one note she is NOT entitled to any thing

      July 14, 2014 at 5:19 pm

I agree with your part on Zoe but beg to differ as to why Lisa sued her biological parent’s estate? Ummmmm she was a heir to the estate and as her only child legally she is entitled to it, there obviously was some deep pain that she has to endure and that she and her mom obviously went through some struggles as she disinherited but let’s not assume that all that was on Lisa the child’s fault and yes, Nina clearly had some issues mentally but we don’t know the details of what this young had to endure so at best respect her story and allow her to do as so please, after all it was her mother and who would know her more intimately than her and black folks please quit it with the continued perpetuated hatred to us bi racial black people, those are your personal identity issues, Zoe is a an actress fulfilling a role, who said the person had to look exactly like the person being portrayed?? Yes your self hatred is showing, get a mirror, look deep and get it together, racism is the worse amongst ourselves and it must stop!

African-American parents, please be advised and informed that if you give Your Children too much material things you may be called a Monster. However, if you are poor and give them too little you end up being an angel! It is highly preposterous, but true! My older Children who were born during the years their Mother and I were struggling financially are the most giving, understanding and loving adults.
Those Children born after their mother and I had made it out of the struggling mode are the most selfish, unfeeling, misguided, unappreciative and self-centered people around.

Answer to this issue: Make sure Your Children experience some of life many challenges! Make sure they are involved in community service so that they will see and get to experience some of the many challenges that people less-fortunate experience. Make them earn things!

@nothing but the truth. I don’t think that she was calling her mother a monster because she brought her materialistic things, she said her mother was often mad at the world and took it out in her.. I’m not totally familiar with her work or her music but at that age i too called my mother a monster.

Genius sometimes has many sides. Her ability to bring forth an extraordinary amount of feelings with her music was phenomenal. And her ability, care and concern to speak to the injustices of racism which plague us even more today was more then admirable. There is a point though, where individuals of her caliber and passion have to feel as if they have been sucked dry. Lisa’s comment about her mother being mad at the world was well spoken. Sadly, and unfortunately it is often taken out on those we love the most.

Let us not limit our thoughts, love and concern for Nina and or her daughter because of ill chosen words. I am certain at some point in time all children have spoken wildly about there parents, and or loved ones.

For the record, Zoe Saladana is NOT AFRICAN AMERICAN! She is Purto rican & Dominican.. Google people… But regardless of that, NO ONE KNOWS this woman like her own child! If her child discribed her as a monster (sometime) than that’s her right to feel that way! To say she was spoiled & unappreciative is just passing judgement! The girl was in boarding schools majority of her child hood! It doesn’t sound like her mother took a big interest in her child’s life! And even with Nina Simone having a mental Illness, that doesn’t excuse her being a monster to her child! Ppl are so quick to make excuses for other ppl when y’all have no clue! Or to pass judgement when you haven’t the experience or exposure that someone else may have. We are ALL on the outside looking in!

    • Oh Really?

      July 14, 2014 at 3:06 pm

What is the BIG deal about Zoe Saldana playing Nina Simone? She’s a very good actress and quite frankly, I can see her playing that part. Ms. Simone was a regal woman with a lot of problems. At least they’re not asking Lindsay Lohan to play her with dark makeup. Sheesh! If she is Puerto Rican and Dominican, that makes her Black. Dominicans are of African descent. Give that crap a rest already. You are passing judgment like everyone else.

Thank You! Couldn’t have said it better. I get really sick of people wanting to excuse folks for all kind of abuses and wrongs that they’ve committed against those closest around them, simply because they’re ‘talented.’ Talent is not a get out of jail free card. or at least it shouldn’t be. if you can’t show basic concern and care for those closest to you, but claim to want to advocate for the world, then your priorities are messed up.

Amen FastBlack. First of all, one of Nina Simone’s biggest inner struggles was tied to her skin complexion, which led to the perception that she was too African to be a diva. This haunted her professional career. Hollywood is so preoccupied with white supremacy, that they would ignore this and cast a light-skinned actress to portray her. Viola Davis, an actress with much more depth, and one who more resembles Nina, would have been the perfect choice. We share the blame in this non-sense – witness Aretha Franklin asking Halle Berry to portray her in her autobiography.

Rick your comment speaks to truth…the choice of Zoe Saldana, Halle Berry or allegedly Lil’ Kim’s preference that an Asian should have portrayed her in the Biggie Smalls movie Notorious…just perpetrates the “lie from hell” about “dark skin”…I seriously doubt Ms. Nina Simone would want her portrayal by an an actress who would make her likeness more palatable…Ms. Nina Simone purposely portrayed herself as unpalatable…difficult. She was not always an alcoholic or disable by mental illness…she was never a buffoon…

  13. Truth speaks!

    July 14, 2014 at 4:01 pm

Oh Really: The problem with Zoe is that she has no characteristics of Ms. Simone. When a bio pic is made, it’s made to portray the real person and their life. The ideal is to cast an actor as close as possible to what the real person looks like. Yes Zoe is a good actor, but they are other actors out there that could play that roll. Viola Davis for one. I mean I’ve seen the pics of Zoe and they have black make up on her, Fake teeth, and a afro wig that looks horrible. Like really! What if Halle Berry played Tina Turner and Angela Davis played Dorothy Dandridge just because they are “great actors”? Come on that would have been silly. What if Taraji P. Henson played Selena..would that be ok? No! Because it’s not representing who the real person was. So it’s not about passing judgment, it’s about the truth! Let’s stop sugar coating things and look at what’s real.
As far as the daughter goes, she needs to have several! I don’t care if you are black, white, hispanic, or hatian, stop airing out dirty laundry when the person is no longer with us! Her mother can not defend herself against these claims. I don’t know what went on in their personal life and I don’t care either. I just pray that they were able to forgive each other before Ms. Simone passed away in 2003.

In my opinion, the real issue is attributed to mental health issues, how families are affected, and what happens if it goes untreated. This can and does happen to any human being, whether of celebrity status or not. The real message here people is that we’re all only human beings regardless of status, plain and simple. Lastly, I must also include that our community does still have some educating and reality checks to contend with, when it comes to openly discuss things such as mental health, including the stigma. We cannot even get most African American churches to discuss the topic/subject matter beyond scripture reference. Sadly, most within the church have the mis-informed/mis-educated tendency, to address mental health issues, as demon possession. This is wrong on so many levels. Most mental health issues stem from chemical imbalances within the brain. I pray that we come out of the dark ages and get a real revelation from on high.

I knew Nina well, during the 1960s, and she was a wonderful and joyful person AND FRIEND to be around. I was living in New York at the time, and even met her husband, Andrew Stroud, one in Brooklyn. And again, I must ask about this white boy, Andrew Bolsinger, who is so possessed with writing about black people? And he comes up with a lot of oddball stories, that never have all of the true facts, and full information to go with the story. And have you always noticed, that this website points out and pours out some information, be it true or not, that he is such a great writer. So, again, I ask: Why is he focusing so much time with black news, if he is such a great writer of the white world? I NEVER care much for whites that want to give their views of their journalistic twists to black news. Is Nina’s husband still around? And if so, or even if not, where are some of his views on Nina-baby, as I use to call her? For naturally, this daughter is a bit “tangled up” and bitter, (mad is a better word) and doesn’t have much good to say. — Rev. George Brooks

I believe the Best way to resolve this situation with this Movie of “Nina” being so unjustly represented is to……BOYCOTT IT!! Just hold your Dollars, don’t support it. This is what we are are going to have to get in the habit of doing for groups or any organizations that disrespects us. We are going to boycott any group or person, store..,etc who feels that they can just disregard notifying us, or consulting with us before write anything about our rich history, or choosing who they desire to portray our beautiful images. Personally, I think Zoe is a very talented young lady, but just not suited for this part. You must know that it was done deliberately; just to bring division with people of color. The old tactic of divide and conquer. An attempt to shake up, and upset the masses. Brothers and Sisters,we can’t be emotional, we have to first stop and look for the arterial motive.

@Sister Black, you are correct on your assessment of the situation. What one forget is that Hollyweed is looking for what is Tres` Chic or the flavor of the day. Hollyweed will pick anyone without regards to biographical talent of the person that is being produced.

What is sad is the that fact that folks are so in awe of her work that they cannot believe that she was not a pleasant person. Maybe it was her mental illness that caused her to torment her child but apparently she knew how to stop the torment when it came to her work. Just maybe she should not have been a parent but whatever it was too bad she did not get help.

We talked in depth about the civil rights movement in the 60s and my experience while visiting relatives in Mississippi when the 3 civil rights workers were kidnapped and murdered not far from my great-grandmother’s farm in Lauderdale, MS.

No disrespect to what her daughter is now attempting to share, but Nina Simone’s contributions to the Civil & Human Rights struggle will forever be remembered & appreciated. I hope that, if her daughter’s accusations are true, that she finds a way to forgive. But at the same time, I’m suspicious about her. Back when Nina’s much less talented (& I’m being kind) daughter recorded an album & called herself “Simone”, she praised her mother on the back of the album cover. So what story is really true? Also, while I love Zoe Saldana, I believe that an actress like Viola Davis, would have been more realistic in playing Nina!

Here we are again. Tali says that Zoe is not Black – she is Puerto Rican or Dominican. Puerto Rico and Dominica are countries – not races. This would be like saying that Denzel Washington is not Black – he is American. Listen carefully, slavery was exported throughout the Americas (north and south) and the Caribbean. In Puerto Rico, Dominica, Cuba, slaves were raped by Spaniards. In the US, they were raped by English, Irish and other Europeans. Does this make them any different from us. The fact that they speak Spanish excludes them from our experience? How foolish can you be?

I mean come on people……you’re bi- racial as opposed to what? Singular-racial? See how stupid that sounds. Stop feeding into the divisions they want us to live. when i was 13 my best friend played me a song of nina …and asked me if it was a man or a woman…i said …well, it sounds like a man but its a woman…and when i grow up …i will perform with her on stage…i will play flute for c line woman….my friend asked me …how do you know that ..and i said …i dont know …i just know…and to make a long story short..for now…we met when i was 27,and told me that i was her protegee,as she had been told by a psychic that she would meet her son from atlantis..who would be very well trained in the art of classical singing…
she commanded me to sing for her…comfort ye my people…and she wept…
our communication was telepathic…and i found my self caring for a great artist who was full of fear and rage…one who screamed and threw dinner plates against the wall…i called her a screaming star in hollywood…
she had so many different personalities…some of which were…
an egyptian queen,an africian queen, a swiss woman, a french woman,an army officer…a sweet adorable little child who was about 5..and the most gracious artist that i was ever on stage with …or the opposite…

once a man appeared in marina del rey ..and asked her to play the role of marian anderson in a movie….now i tried to imagine nina as marian anderson…which if probably just about as absurd as some other than black woman …daring to try to play the role of the great nina simone…

nina was shattered…by the music industry…and she was afraid…and she one time screamed for 48 hours…until only hissing came out of her throat…because the man at the trubador did not pay her that money for the new years eve concert…which was sold out…i thought that there might be a riot…i imagined that people would start throwing chairs and tables…it was a most amazing experience for me…

i during that time ..i heard some of the fights that she and her daughter had over the phone…it was frightful to hear…i mean really scary…

nina came to me when she made her death transition…in a dream…and we played twin grand pianos…and i could see the pastel colors of the music…
when i awoke i was writing an email to a friend…and suddenly felt the words of a song that she taught me …to sing and play…which we performed in montreal…if you knew how i missed you…

i felt her all around me…and on my way to my rehearsal of otello …in vienna…there came an americain jewish girl…on her bike…saying …to me you heard about nina didnt you…i said …nina who…she said …nina simone died last night…and the girl came and put her arms around me as i wept….

it took me many years …to forgive nina for the last message that she left for me on my cell phone…it was not the real nina…only an angry aspect…of her….

and since that time …i have found a greater compassion …and forgiveness …
she told me that she wanted me to sing her songs…
and i have been doing it …

nina never learned how to love her self…
she wanted her fans to do it for her..
    but it never worked…
    she was a lovely woman…

    Dear Family;

I’m living through the same type of family horror Lisa did. I adored Ms. Simone and find it hard to believe that a true person, as she was know to be( and a follower of Jesus Christ), would be so abusive, especially to her only child.(When it comes to fighting family, for me, the best thing was leave it to God. He doesn’t make mistakes. My case was my mother was the baby out of six children. Two boys and four girls. My grandfather was the first Black postman in Yazoo City, MS. He was hired because he was the only one in the main office who could read. When he died, his remaining son rushed his personal holding using a quick claims deed and stole all my Papa had had. He discovered my grandfather’s accounts were worth $3,000,000+. The court fight and poison sentiments destroyed my family.) At the time of his death, my mother, uncle and aunt had passed. Only two sisters and the evil uncle remained. For each of his grands whose parents had died, My uncle cut us out. He only included my two aunts because he had to.) Since his sin, he’s lost his wife and much treasured only son.) He’s now able to purchase anything he wants, but I’ve been watching God cut him down to size. I understand that people, like Ms. Simone, who were basically fighting her civil rights battle alone, usually develop temperament as that similarly described by her daughter. In Jesus’ name, I pray it wasn’t just as she said. (Because there’s always more info than that released. I knew Ms. Simone as a type of gentle, but aggressive bulldog when it came to the citizen’s rights of her people. (I always felt Mississippi god damn was written for me.) I understood why she left her home country and traveled the world, in an attempt to escape from the ingrained and accepted prejudices all of us, as African Americans have at times. And she, with the visibility she earned was a highly, talented, highly effective representative of her people. As for the court case about her estate, I hope Lisa won. No matter what the reasons were, no parent with any assets that can advance their children, should be allowed to slight them.
Praying for her well being. In Jesus’ name, I pray for her.

It should come as no surprise that everybody is human. Simone had depression and a problem with alcohol- sadly such behaviour is to be expected. She was still a genius, and really pushed musical boundaries with her talent. RIP.
