Jersey City, NJ resident Lawrence Campbell was wanted for murder. He knew that the police were coming for him, so he set up an ambush. When Officer Melvin Santiago approached Campbell, he was met with a gun. Campbell executed the officer on the spot. Campbell was then shοt and killed by the other officers that were at the scene. Campbell’s wife, Angelique, was furious over her husband’s deαth and stated that he should have killed more police officers. “He should’ve taken more [officers] with him,” she said.

A memorial was set up on the street where Campbell lived with candles, liquor bottles, and t-shirts with handwritten messages. Officer Santiago’s step-father was outraged by the display. He didn’t understand how people could glorify a person who was wanted for one murder and that viοlently killed another person. The memorial was set up, in part, to glorify Campbell because he wanted to be famous. He told his friends to watch the news later on in the day because he was going to be famous after it aired.

The mayor of Jersey City stated that he felt sorry for Angelique Campbell. “At first, I was angry, and the more I thought about it, I just feel more sad for her, that she lives her life in that sort of mental state,” he told The New York Post on Monday. She later attempted to clarify her original statement: “Sorry for the officer’s family. That’s, you know, whatever. But, at the end of the day, [Lawrence] got a family, too. All they care about is the officer.” She questioned why emergency personnel were called for the police officer but allegedly not called for her husband.

Right before he was murdered, Santiago had been asked if he was afraid of dying at all. He replied that if it was his time maybe it was better if he died for a good cause.
