A Spelman College fundraising campaign that began in 2009 surpassed its goal of raising $150 million dollars earlier this year.

The board of trustees launched the “Every Woman Every Year” comprehensive fundraising campaign in 2009. The school announced that it raised a total of $157.8 million.

Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, president of the college, and Board of Trustees Chair Rosalind Gates Brewer, made the announcement, according to report on HelloBeautiful.com

This campaign has allowed the Spelman board to fund new faculty positions, renew the campus with the renovation of Laura Spelman Rockefeller Hall, and help with the construction of Reed Hall. Reed Hall will be the home of a wellness revolution that the college intends to launch.

They have also expanded their technology and raised $50 million towards scholarship support, according to the report. The new amount doubles the scholarships the college previously has offered.

Spelman has used the funds to create a center for international education, opening the door for students to travel and obtain an international education at Spelman.

“It is tremendously gratifying to see the college moving ahead with such momentum and I want to thank our entire Spelman community for helping us make history together. I look forward to celebrating this tremendous success on campus at homecoming this October,” Tatum announced.

Tatum used the success of the campaign to also announce her retirement at the end of the year.

She said she wanted to return to her writer and scholar roots.

“I have cherished the opportunity and take great pride in what we have accomplished together.”
