Financial Lovemaking: Why doesn’t Sherri Shepherd want her baby anymore?

By  |  0 Comments

sherri1 In this episode of Financial Lovemaking, Dr. Boyce Watkins and S. Tia Brown talk about the financial and romantic implications of the decision by Sherri Shepherd to try to walk away from her contractual commitment to take care of her surrogate child.  There are some who say that since the child was not created from her eggs, Sherri has no commitment to the baby. But there are others who say that if you agree to take care of a child and bring it into this world, it would be irresponsible to leave it up to the state to do the work that you’ve commited yourself to do.

The child was made from a donor’s egg and was carried by a surrogate, so there are technically three different women who could legally be considered to be the mother of this child. It was during her pending divorce with Lamar Sally that Shepherd made it clear that she didn’t want to raise the child anymore, and that the baby was Sally’s responsibility, not her own.

While S. Tia Brown from Ebony Magazine says that she believes that Shepherd should be given the chance to walk away, Dr. Boyce Watkins says that the child’s well- being must be considered and that it won’t cost Sherri much money to make sure that the child is provided for. As of right now, the courts are deciding what will happen to the child, as well as Sherri’s role in this complex Financial Lovemaking scenario. What do you think?  Should Sherri be able to walk away as if nothing happened, or does she at least owe this baby some kind of financial support?
