On May 29, the music world lost a notable gospel musician and songwriter: Professor Melvin Crispell. Crispell, who was responsible for writing a series of gospel hits, passed away at Carolina Medical Center in Pineville, North Carolina. He was 46.

Although no official cause of death has been released, it has been reported that Crispell may have died of diabetes-related complications after he had undergone a minor surgery. The surgery was necessary because, according to sources close to the family, Crispell had been involved in a car accident about a week before he died. During the accident, glass was embedded in his foot. It was while trying to remove the glass that Crispell lost a considerable amount of blood which resulted in his having high blood pressure and, ultimately, caused his death.

Crispell was credited for works like Hezekiah Walker’s “Jesus is My Help” and “Wonderful is Your Name” and James Hall Worship & Praise tracks “Caught Up” and “He Took My Place“.
