Why are 72% of black children growing up in single parent homes?
Reported by Liku Zelleke
A shocking fact has been revealed during the Black Women Film Festival: As of 2013, 72 percent of African American children are born to single mothers.
This sobering fact is the main agenda that an upcoming documentary film tries to focus on. Entitled “72%“, it was screened during the festival that was held on June 13th.
Independent film fans attended the festival that was held at the NASA Science Center at Spelman College where they were able to watch a selection of films that were made to inspire and uplift – as well as made by and about – black women.
Although there wasn’t much inspiration coming from “72%,” it did lead to a positive outcome. The attendees of the festival were encouraged to take a deeper look into the single motherhood epidemic that was spreading in the black community and even try to find a solution.
After the screening of the documentary from Moguldom Studios, the Deputy Editor of MadameNoire, Brande Victorian, hosted a question and answer session on the topic. She pointed out that society as a whole, it’s been difficult to address the single parent crisis. She also said that the solution come down to women valuing the role of fathers in their lives and that of their children. But men should also understand their role in the process as well.
Dr Boyce Watkins, who is participating in a series of fatherhood panels with former NBA star Etan Thomas, says that the problem is complex in nature and requires a commitment from everyone in order to solve.
“The mass incarceration of hundreds of thousands of black men has created a void in many households, where, for many reasons, the father is not always there to protect his children,” said Dr. Watkins. “This incarceration problem has leaked into the culture where it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Even young people who are not in prison are now thinking that the father is an optional accessory, like a belt to match your shoes or a hat that you may or may not choose to wear, depending on how you feel. Not only are some fathers walking away from their children, but quite a few mothers are sending them away as well.”
What do you think? Is the single parenthood issue a problem or is it one that should never be addressed? Have black women received the bulk of the blame for this problem or have men? Please tell us what you think. Are there solutions?

The female takes the brunt of the blame for this problem because had she rejected the European material matters none of this would ever have happened. She unlike Jesus accepted the devils proposition of accepting all the material gains in the world and lost her soul and that’s why she will forever suffer mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. She is the devils helpmate, and he continues to use her to help him destroy the black man and family by encouraging her to abort her children, lock up the black man and put him in the system, continue to bring the white devil/man and his racist views into the balck mans home, continue to support alleged white supremacy by buying into the white devils ideology. Everytime I use public transportation and the white-nigger bitches board the bus or train thei slave mentality tells the to gravitate/sit next to any and everybody that doesn’t look like them, the have freedom to choose, even in the work place them same nigger bitches will walk in the room and speak to everybody in the room but the black man, but soon as their “ratchet asses” need or want something then they come a running. Black females have been the black mans greatest downfall and God’s greatest mistake, but real conscious women love, honor and respect her creator, her man and children and is not applicable to the above mentioned statement. You do know that there is a difference between a female and a conscious sista don’t you, “PEACE”!!!

Dear Family;
It is unfortunate, but the demographics for this segment of our populace is composed of under aged citizens. Female citizens with a desperate need to be loved, and a great need to have someone to love. Unfortunately the larger percentage of these female citizens also originated from single parent families. “Monkey see, monkey do”, they’ve also seen so many of their family members, neighbors and friends have babies out of wedlock, that it actually becomes old hat to them. The sin baby boomers were taught to attach to out of wedlock births has disappeared. Unfortunately, it has been ultra liberalized by the media and misled celebrities. In all honesty, we need to also include these citizen’s desperate need to be accepted as adults, ladies, women and men.
Unfortunately, in some ethnic communities, another phenomena comes into play. We should all be aware of adult passage rites. For African Americans, it’s almost inbred. Those specific times in a child’s life, male or female, when some act must be performed in order for that individual to finally cross over to adult status. In our communities and many others, this holds true for boys and for girls. For the male, it proves he can effectively reproduce and the same for the female, she is finally a woman, for surely no girl could have a baby.
Now, when these obstacles are finally overcome, there will be much less out of wedlock births. Also, the taboo instilled within my generation was done so by my parents. The parents of any child will suffer much sin and omission lest they not effectively parent.
Be blessed;
And may God bless us all.

Young brothers making babies does Not make you a man. Being a responsible father does. Young sisters having a baby without a responsible father and husband is Not an option!

I agree Its the lack of values.I’ve never had a unwanted pregnancy because I took birth control everyday. I was a virgin when I meet my husband. I cant lie we had sex b4 the wedding. We married in 1991. Love is a beautiful thing.

I don’t believe the numbers. This is just the BS they put out to convince Black People, we are that messed up. True, the rate at which Black Men have been locked up since the 70’s, has removed a lot of Men, 72% of Fatherless children is BS. Don’t believe the hype. America is trying to destroy Black Children, but they have not got them all. Stayup People. Peace

everthing that happen,god allow it and if he want things to change he would either change them,or put
you in a position of opportunity to change either under a troubling situation,or under a situation that
provide for the circumstance.

The statistics that serve as the foundation of this article can possibly be debated, as skewing of data has become a way of business in public and private sector organizations. As a retired Child Protection Professional of thirty five years, my view of the current situation regarding single parenthood in our communities, can be directly attributed to diminishing values with regards to acceptance of personal responsibility. Individuals MUST understand that becoming a parent must not be considered as fulfillment of sexual needs. Becoming a parent is a commitment, not an entitlement. Once children are born, regardless of their birth circumstances, parents must ensure that personal responsibility is equally modeled and taught to both gender of children. If this concept could be understood by parents, the issue of unplanned pregnancies by unprepared children and young adults would radically decrease, thus resulting in more positive outcomes for our communities and children, socially, educationally, and economically.

People are sooo in denial about this till they will blame everybody but themselves for it because that is what the problem is,when females stop blaming males for these girls havin babies maybe then we can start a dialogue but until then,it will continue to be the same old thing.

If we’re not part of the solution than were apart of the problem. I feel if we could get our elders and young children together in a program were our elders can help teach our kids some old school values. We would be giving our elders something to do and our children, so they can learn how to talk to people, act walk sit dress all the manors they need to help them get jobs and respect themselves and each other. It’s just a thought, but I think it’s a good one.
