Waffle House Server Forced to Return $1,000 Tip

A customer who tried to bless a graveyard server at a North Carolina Waffle House had his money returned by management.
Shaina Brown, a seven-year veteran, was given $1,000 by a local area businessman who chooses to remain anonymous. But the management at Waffle House returned the tip, according to a story on newsobserver.com
At 3 a.m. last Mother’s Day, the patron eating a Texas bacon patty melt called Brown over and said, “I’m going to bless you tonight,” Brown said.
He paid his bill with a credit card and wrote $1,500 on the tip line, asking Brown to share $500 with a haggard-looking woman at a table nearby, the newspaper reported.
“Then he vanished into a cab, telling Brown, ‘You have a good spirit,’” she said.
Waffle House returned the tip.
“I feel like they stole from me,” said Brown, 26. “They did exactly what they teach us not to do.”
The newspaper confirmed the story with the customer.
Kelly Thrasher, a Waffle House spokeswoman, said large tips are refunded to patrons as a regular procedure.
“Generous tippers are asked to tip again by cash or check. The restaurant handles it that way, she explained, in case the customer decides to dispute the tip later or ask for a refund,” the newspaper reported.
The reporter who investigated the incident contacted the businessman and passed on Brown’s name and phone number. He said he’d send her a personal check for the tip.
