Cookie Johnson has got to be the epitome of a Christian wife. She has stood by her husband in one of the most shocking revelations in history. After sleeping with countless women, Magic acquired HIV at the height of his basketball career. Instead of leaving her husband, Cookie stood by him and the couple continued to flourish together.

This, of course, couldn’t have been an easy decision for her, as it would mean the couple would have to take extra steps in their physical dealings with one another to protect her from acquiring the disease, but one can only wonder as to what made her stay in the relationship. There are few times when Cookie has discussed her reaction to her husband’s diagnosis. What we do know is she described the revelation of his diagnosis as “traumatic” because she found out she was pregnant at the time and feared that she and her baby may have acquired the disease. After she and the baby tested negative, Cookie said “I still had to worry about my husband,” which leaves one to interpret that she probably never planned to leave him after he tested positive for the disease.

Cookie and Magic dated 14 years before marrying and have been married for 22 years.  The couple gave birth to one son together, although Magic had another son prior to marrying Cookie, and adopted a daughter in 1995.  In a recent interview with Ebony, the couple shares intimate details about what almost brought their loving marriage to an end, and it’s (surprisingly) not due to Magic’s HIV-positive status.
