Magic Johnson and Wife Cookie Reveal Why They Almost Split Up
Magic Johnson and wife Cookie grace the cover of this month’s Ebony magazine and reveal what almost cost them their marriage. Although they appear to be a solid couple on the outside, they reveal that at one point they’d grown apart and almost called it quits.
“We had our ups and downs. We had a period where we were about to separate,” Cookie said. “There was a point where I was home all the time; he was working. Sometimes you start growing apart a little because he’s seeing new adventurous stuff. He’s out in the world. He’s growing. [But] I’m stagnant.”
Magic says the only thing he’s ever wanted is to be with his wife and the tough times have made him treasure his relationship even more.
“If I had kept going [that way] and the kids left, we would probably be divorced,” he explained. “Now we’re so connected to each other, but it took that situation to bring us back. I’ve always told Cookie, ‘The only thing I wanted was to grow old with you.’ [Now] we just look at each other and say how blessed we are.”
Cookie is also an entrepreneur now and Magic says he’s delighted at her transformation.
“It’s so sεxy,” Magic said. “It is beautiful to see her become this brand; this CEO.”
Now the couple says they’re always working to maintain their marriage in spite of the busy schedules.
Magic says he thanks God that even with HIV, he’s alive to watch his family thrive.
