The developing Whitney Houston movie has found its leading lady. Yaya DaCosta has reportedly been chosen to play the late singer in a movie that will air on the Lifetime network.

DaCosta is best known as the runner-up on Cycle 3 of American’s Next Top Model. Since then, she has been spotted in both television and in movies such as Ugly Betty, The Butler and Mother of George.

The movie will focus on the earlier parts of Houston’s career, as well as her rocky relationship with husband Bobby Brown. The Houston family has expressed their disapproval of the movie. Pat Houston, Whitney’s sister-in-law and former manager, told TMZ “Whitney is certainly worthy of more than a television movie. If Whitney were here today, this would not be happening.”

Whitney’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina, also shared some words on the matter last month on Twitter.

“I don’t know how to feel, this so called “film” isn’t in my positive thoughts,” she wrote. “That’s MY mother, what makes YOU think that’s ok with me?”

She also wrote that her mother had always wanted Bobbi Kristina to play her in a biopic, and that she would not be pleased with the film unless she had the leading role.

The film’s director, Angela Basset, released a statement last month concerning why she has been moved to be involved with the film.

“I have such regard for both Whitney’s and Bobby’s amazing talents and accomplishments; and I feel a responsibility in the telling of their story. Their humanity and bond fascinates us all. I’m beyond excited to have this opportunity to go behind the camera and into their world.”

The Lifetime movie is scheduled to premier in 2015.
