Father and daughter chase the men who broke into their house

Fear and outrage combined to motivate a father and daughter to follow a truck driven by the people who had just robbed their house and record their entire event on a cellphone.

NewsOne reports that Dr. Kevin Smith and his 22-year-old daughter Alana arrived home and spotted a red pickup truck pulling out of their driveway. Both were immediately concerned for Alana’s sister Kara who had been at home alone and didn’t answer when they tried to call her.

“I locked eyes on them, and their eyes were terrified. I knew that they had done something terrible,” Alana said in an interview with CNN. “I didn’t know what happened to my sister, and I didn’t know if she was OK. My instinct was this was my only chance to get these guys.”

Smith recorded the chase, while Alana drove their vehicle.

Smith had just returned from a business trip and Alana had gone to the airport to pick him up.

As the Alana drove their vehicle, the men in the pickup tried to elude them. Twice the driver put his truck in reverse twice, crashing in to Smith’s Audi 8 sedan.  The second collision killed Smith’s motor. On the recorded tape of the incident, Smith calmly instructed his daughter to turn the car back on and stay with the truck.

Eventually the men turned their truck around and aimed it right for the Audi.

“It was just like in the movies,” Kevin Smith said. “It was really eerie. At the end of this road, you see the truck turn around and you see the red truck popped out of the dust and head toward us.”

The pickup then revved up and smashed right in to Smith’s car, sending all of them right in to a ditch. Smith then called the authorities, and within minutes, officers were able to arrest two of the three men involved in the robbery.

Both men are facing criminal charges. Police strongly urge citizens not to conduct their own chase of potential criminals.

Smith believes the burglars were also responsible for other robberies that took place in his neighborhood as of late. He said his daughter’s calm impressed him as well.

“I’m proud of my daughter,” Smith said. “As a father, you really don’t know how you raised your kid until they get older and you see how they can handle themselves. I don’t want her to be cavalier, but I want her to know I am proud.”

Kara had been at the gym working out while the robbery took place.

Smith sustained no injuries from the collision, and Alana, who was checked for whiplash at a nearby hospital, was later released.  Smith says he was able to retrieve most of his stolen belongings.
