It has been almost 20 years since the infamous chase of OJ Simpson on the LA freeway. It all happened on June 17, 1994. CNN is airing a special on Tuesday, June 17th titled “OJ’s Wild Ride: 20 Years After the Chase.” The slow speed, 60 mile chase was on televisions in the homes of millions of viewers on that day. During the special, some interesting facts about the chase come to light.

1. Even though it was a huge day for sports on that day, the OJ case overtook ratings on television. The Rangers were celebrating a Stanley Cup win. Arnold Palmer played his last round in the U.S. Open. Ken Griffey, Jr. tied Babe Ruth’s homerun record. The Knicks were playing game 5 in the NBA finals against the Rockets. Yet none of them had the highest ratings on TV that day.

2. Simpson claimed that he was not running from the police but the items in the Bronco told a different tale. Police found $9,000 in cash, a fake goatee with glue, Simpson’s passport, and the gun that he was holding on to.

3. The most memorable moments for many people from the last 20 years were the chase and the “not guilty” finding during the trial. It is estimated that the verdict of the trial was the third most impactful moment on television. In front of it were the 2001 9/11 attacks and Hurrican Katrina coverage in 2005.

4. Rob Kardashian, father of the famed Kardashian trio, was a close friend of OJ’s. Kardashian had a letter from OJ that stated that he had nothing to do with Nicole’s murder and that he wanted everyone to think of the OJ that they used to know.

5. During the televised chase, no one was getting up to make dinner. Families ordered out instead. Dominos stated that they had record sales on the day that the chase was on television.
