According to Runoko Rashidi, Muslim author of the book “Black Star: The African Presence in Early Europe,” African people were right alongside the victorious Muslims when they drove out the Christian crusaders in the eighth century. He adds that they were called Moors at that time and the word has ever since been used to describe black or very dark Africans.

The 60-year-old Los Angeles-based essayist, public lecturer, historian, and African-American goes on to write that the Moors were responsible for many victories in the past and in a vast number of regions of Asia.

One of the most successful Moors of his time, Tarik, successfully conquered Spain in 711 and a famous port in the county bears his name, honoring the overwhelming victory against a vastly superior number of forces, according to Rashidi.
