Why won’t my hair grow?

Since the exponential increase of African Americans going chemical free, it has been proven that black girls can have long hair. For years, we have made so many decisions that can damage our hair, causing slower growth, but there are some things you can do to grow your hair to its fullest potential.

Too Much Product

Do you find yourself packing on a ton of product? Well this could be the cause of slowed hair growth. In order for the hair to grow, it has to be able to push through your follicle, and using too much product can clog it. When it come to African American hair, our follicle is thinner than others and our hair has to work a bit harder to push through, which is actually why our hair is so kinky. If you are a product junkie, you can still pack on the product but make sure hair is cleansed and exfoliated at least twice a month. This will rid the scalp of product build up, giving your tresses full reign to flow down your back.

Agree Clarice!! Other factors include vitamins/minerals..Biotin/B Vitamins. In postmenopausal women there could be a Progesterone deficiency. What we eat/drink has a huge impact on our immune systems! Fatty/greasy food..too much sugar/soda..chips. Possibly add more green/leafy veggies..lean organic meats. Horsetail(Silica) is huge for restoring/keeping hair healthy and strong!

Maybe if blacks washed their hair more often there wouldn’t be such a problem. They don’t wash their hair everyday and it is dirty and filthy. Therefore, hair cannot grow through follicles that are clogged with dirt and dandruff.

We don’t HAVE to wash our hair like OTHERS!!! Stay away from chemicals and your hair will grow. Natural is best!

One hair “grows” if not, there would be no need for a “touch up” for those who use perms or for those who dye their hair to re apply hair dye.

Rather, the question is, “Why can’t I retain length”?

I know many do not shampoo or blow dry their own hair but rather only go to salon for services.

The following however is for those who are willing to shampoo and style their own hair

    1. Keep your ends moisturized.

    2. Tie you hair up each evening and/or sleep on a silk pillow case

    3. “Deep condition” you hair at least once a month

    4. Consider taking vitamins, biotin in particular is good for the health of hair.

    5. Minimize the use of heat.

    6. Learn to use so called “protective hair do’s” that do not require the frequent use of heat to maintain.

    7. Massage you scalp occasionally.

    8. Shampoo more often than every two weeks. One could do what is frequently called a “co wash” whereby you shampoo with just conditioner.

Even if you wear a natural style you should keep you hair moisturized.

Great advice, Anike. I would just caution sistahs on using protective styles. Many place too much tension on the hair which can lead to breakage and hair loss.

Devon not every black women wears weave. I have only worn weave one time in my 38yrs of life. It’s just not my thing but I’m not knocking anyone that does. But you do have to maintain your own hair up under it. You do have to wash your hair at least once a week and do everything Anike said if you want your hair to grow.

You have to excuse and pray for Devon that SELF hatred is eating away at him/her. And to be negative ALL the time is the only way people like that feel good about themselves ! They knock someone down just so they can stand up! They can’t be about of the solution because they strive in negativity of the problem.

We must also remember that hair length and growth is a matter of genetics as well.

I’m in my 60’s and I have a thick full head of hair and I only wash it once weekly. I do keep it moisturized.

I have washed my hair everyday for probably 30 years and I am an African American Woman. My hair growth is very slow, and my hair is short to medium length. There are many factors related to hair growth and a couple of which are genes and nutrition.

As for the comment on hair washing, I know many white and other races of women who do not wash their hair everyday; maybe every 3 or four days. I personally wash my hair everyday because it is relaxing to me. Although I do not sweat much especially on my head, I dislike the smell of hair that smells sweaty. I walk by all races of people and can smell what I call “hair smell”.

African American’s are different from other races so our hair issues are our own, so I don’t understand why there are comments from people that have no issues here.
