More girls keep getting kidnapped in Nigeria as US sends advisory team

It’s been a month since more than 200 girls were kidnapped in the northeastern Nigerian town of Chibok. It has also been a week since Boko Haram, a terrorist group operating in that part of the country, claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack.

Now, the US is sending a team of officials to help the Nigerian government in locating and recovering the girls.

The advisory team will compromise of military, law enforcement and hostage negotiation personnel.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, “The team could provide expertise on intelligence, investigations and hostage negotiations, help facilitate information sharing and provide victim assistance. It would include U.S. military personnel, law enforcement officials with expertise in investigations and hostage negotiations, as well as officials with expertise in other areas that may be helpful to the Nigerian government in its response.”

In what looks like steps taken to assuage fears that the country might get mired into another war, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said that the US government and the military’s involvement was on an advisory basis alone and nothing more.

“We are not considering at this point military resources,” he said. “What I can tell you is that it is certainly Nigeria’s responsibility to maintain safety and security of its citizens.”

On Tuesday, President Barack Obama said that “obviously it’s a heartbreaking situation, outrageous situation. We’ve already sent in a team to Nigeria — they’ve accepted our help through a combination of military, law enforcement, and other agencies who are going in, trying to identify where in fact these girls might be and provide them help.”

In the meantime, on Tuesday, 8 more girls were abducted from their schools adding to the outrage. The girls aged between 8 and 15 were also taken from the northeastern Borno state.

It is suspected this round of kidnapping was also the work of the same terrorist group.
