Dr. Jill Scott? Award-Winning Singer/Actress Receives Honorary Doctorate From Alma Mater

Jill Scott’s alma mater, Temple University, will be awarding her an honorary doctorate.  Scott is a successful singer and actress who is from Philadelphia, which is where the university is located. Prior to becoming fully vested in her music and acting careers, Scott studied secondary education and planned on being a high-school English teacher when she matriculated at Temple.

Scott released her first album, Who Is Jill Scott? in 2000.  She won her first Grammy award for Best Urban/Alternative R&B Performance for a song titled “Cross My Mind.”  She later won two more Grammy’s as well as four NAACP Image Awards.  In 2001, Scott received the Aretha Franklin Award as “Entertainer of the Year” at the Lady of Soul Awards.  Her vocal and song writing ability have won her the respect of fans as well as fellow artists.

Scott began pursuing her acting career in 2000. Since then, she has performed in theater, television, and film.  She was awarded an NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Actress in a Television Move, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special for her role in Sins of the Mother.  While many artists do not manage to win respect and acknowledgement in both singing and acting, Scott appears to have succeeded in both fields.

Temple University’s president Neil D. Theobald, feels as though Scott’s “values and achievements embody the mission and ideas of the university.”  As part of charitable work, Scott established the Blues Babe Foundation, which helps young minority students pay for college expenses who are from Philadelphia, Camden, and the greater Delaware Valley.  She named the foundation after her grandmother.  Scott has also used her platform as a successful artist to speak up about how inappropriately and disrespectfully black women are portrayed in rap lyrics and music videos.

Scott will be receiving the honor of Doctor of Humane Letters.
