Bishop Allyson D. Nelson Abrams left the church in October without any pressure from the congregation after having led the church for five years.  She says that she felt it was in the best interest of those in her congregation for her to resign as Detroit is considered to have a fairly conservative religious theology.

She stated to NewsOne that she felt like it was important that she not be dishonest about her sexuality and that being honest about it was part of staying true to her Christian upbringing which taught her to always be truthful.
