A Chicago special education teacher was sitting in a real estate office on Thursday when shechicago_teacher was struck and kιlled by a stray bullet.

NBC Chicago reports that the gunfire stemmed from a gang altercation that erupted outside.

Betty Howard, 58, was a teacher at  Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy.

Principal D’Andre Weaver described how students and teachers are dealing with Howard’s deαth.

“Our entire staff, students, and parents are deeply saddened by the unexpected, untimely, and unwarranted loss of our friend, teacher, and colleague,” he told CBS Chicago. “Dr. Howard has been a member of our family for many years. Her love for all children, but particularly children with diverse learning needs, was second to none.”

He said her love for students will be her legacy.

“This tragedy reiterates the importance of high quality education and the opportunity for social mobility for all children in the City of Chicago,” Weaver said. “As educators, we believe this is the only true way to combat generational poverty, rampant crime, and the sense of helplessness felt by many people in our minority-dominated communities.”

Howard’s brother is a police officer and says although he’s accustomed to seeing viοlence in the streets, this hιts home for him.

“I feel the pain. I know how other people feel now. We just go to the scene and do what we have to do as a police officer, but now it hitting home and it’s such a terrible situation,” Orlando Long said.

Witnesses say Howard was in the real estate office when the stray bullet struck her in the head. Other people inside the office were grazed by stray bullets but no one else was seriously injured.
