Black Pastors ask: Are gay rights the same as civil rights for blacks?
A coalition of 100 African-American pastors from Detroit, Michigan, are set to lend their support to the appeal made by the city’s Attorney General, Bill Schuette, in the U.S. Court of Appeals to keep an amendment in their constitution about the definition of marriage.
The amendment was ruled unconstitutional by District Court Judge Bernard Friedman in March this year, because it defines marriage as being solely between one man and one woman.
It apparently didn’t matter to the judge that the amendment had been overwhelmingly supported by the constituents of Michigan in a ballot taken in 2004. He overlooked the wish of the majority in favor of those who claimed that the amendment unfairly discriminated against the LGBT community and overturned the “irrational” amendment.
