An eight-year-old girl and her mother claim that the child’s North Carolina school would not allow her to write about Jesus as her hero for a class project.

Second grade students at Cerro Gordo Elementary School in North Carolina were recently asked to write about who they consider to be a hero and explain their decision.

Ryleigh Watts chose Jesus. When she turned in her rough draft, the teacher told her to choose a different topic, according to her mother.

“I think she should have freedom to write about what she wants to write about,” Heather Watts, Ryleigh’s mother, said. “If she wants to write about Jesus, she should write about Jesus.”

School officials told a NBC affiliate that the incident didn’t happen.
