When are black women going to say no to the “Angry Black Woman Stereotype”? Well, Laverne Cox, who has a role in the Netflix series “Orange is the New Black”, speaks out about being the first transgender black woman on an American reality television show and having to stand firm on her principles.

She starred on “I want to work for P.Diddy” in 2008, having to deal with the challenges of portraying an aggressive, fighting black woman. She pushed way from the need to portray that image despite pressure from cast and family. Cox said that her mother even questioned her by saying, “Why didn’t you defend yourself?”

“I remember being really conscious of not wanting to fight with another black woman on camera,” Cox told Buzzfeed’s Saeed Jones. “I did an interview and the producers were like, ‘Well, this [other black woman on the show] said this about you. What do you have to say about that?’ And I said I’m not fighting with another black woman on TV.”

MSNBC host Melissa V. Harris-Perry addressed the stereotypes that have shaped the view of black women in her book, Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America.

Now that she has embraced her role as Sophia in “Orange is the New Black”, her acting career is creating positive steps forward. She is thankful to Diddy for allowing her to be exposed to the national television network that has contributed to her success. She has had guest appearances in many shows, but now she is a part of a great hit series. The show is an original Netflix series is about a group of women in prison, and Season 2 is set to premier on June 6th.
