Tyler Perry hit it big with his first deal with Lionsgate, a multi-picture, multi-million dollar deal that gave rise to the Medea franchise among other movies. But the deal was not renewed and Perry has closed up shop in Los Angeles, according to a report by Deadline Hollywood.

The producer, director and actor still has movies in production with the studio, including Single Mom’s Club due out on March 14.

“The decision was mutual between the studio and Perry’s 34th Street Production, a source close to the situation says, based on a variety of matters such as international distribution and marketing,” Deadline reported.

Perry is said to be consolidating his work in Atlanta at his current Tyler Perry Studios. In 2013, Perry announced a huge expansion of his Atlanta-based studios.

Perry struck another lucrative deal in 2012 with the Oprah Winfrey Network to produce a scripted series.

I have been looking forward to the day when we would be in the position to enter the world of scripted television. That day has come,” said Oprah Winfrey, OWN’s CEO, when the news was released. “We are all energized by the opportunity to collaborate with Tyler who has a proven track record for producing highly successful cable series.”

The Madea franchise was hugely successful over the years. Perry plays Mabel “Madea” Simmons, a 70-year-old sassy, pistol-packing woman in different movies produced with Lionsgate. In the deal Perry maintained full ownership of his movies while Lionsgate controlled the distribution.

Perry has not yet commented on the future of the Madea franchise, but with more movies already in the works it would seem likely to carry on.
