Your Baby Can Tell Your Friends From Your Enemies

baby knows your friends and enemiesBy Dr. Sinclair Grey III

Babies are so amazing. Not only are they cute, adorable, and inquisitive, but they are attuned to what’s happening around them. Yes, they may seem like a perfect bystander, but in reality, babies pick up so much.

A new study shows ‘that babies are also attuned to other people’s relationships, even when those relationships have nothing to do with them.’ What might seem amazing to some, it’s shocking to research in this study.’

If you’ve been around babies for any period of time, you know that babies tend to gravitate towards those who are nice and friendly. Now you’re probably wondering how this research was conducted. Well, if you read below, you’ll get your answer.

University of Chicago psychologists gathered (64) 9-month-old babies and showed them a video of two women eating. The women in the video were shown eating from the same bowl. They would agree that the food was delicious or gross. It also would show them disagreeing.

The women would later interact again either greeting each other with a smile or giving each other the cold shoulder. “Researchers then timed how long the babies spent looking at this last scene, with the idea that the longer the baby spent looking, the more surprising the scene was. Babies spent a long time looking when the women agreed on food but later gave each other the cold shoulder. How could these women, who together enjoyed the mysterious contents of that green bowl, be so cruel to one another moments later? the babies wondered.”

“The results suggest that long before they have any friends themselves, young babies are already making predictions about how people get along. And that’s a social skill that can’t come too early.”

While more research is needed, this study gives an indication on what babies are processing in their heads.

    You are so right Jocelyn!

My baby looked for visual cues to determine if it was safe to be held by certain people… She knew that my sister in law didn’t have positive feelings for me and only stayed a brief time in her arms before crying and reaching for me. Other people that I had good relationships with could hold her all day without any protest.

    I found that so amazing!

      Sistagirl,

Babies’ social behavior is conditioned by the personality or attitude — altitude or height of life — attained by their mother.

Personality development is necessary for civilization. Personality, according to the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, is the ‘whole nature or character of a person’.

How a child behaves, feels, and thinks, how he conducts himself in a given set of circumstances, is largely learned from his mother’s determined state of mind early on in his life.

That means that the mother’s personality, attitude towards others, whether negative or positive, is patterned after by her child. Mother’s “enemies” and “friends” become those of her child.

A book written mostly for women, entitled, “Our Mothers, Ourselves”, raised this psychological-social phenomenon, I believe, for the first time.

I always thought this was one of those innate primal protective measures that fades away as infants mature. It’s the same as when a loving pet displays wariness of supposed friend that means no good. The key is to be aware.

It has always been known with us (Afrikan wisdom passed down from generation to generation) that whenever there is something wrong around or about to happen, that is, presence of a negative enery vibration, babies would be the first to pick it up and indicate this (give a sign) by crying almost continuously or being restless if all obvious reasons have been checked and eliminated as causations.

Babies (Spiritual) intuition is sharper than that of an adult cos theirs is still “a pure/uncluttered state of mind/spirit” that is able to sift through the energy vibrations as they come and go. Animals like dogs have this sixth sense/intuition.

Modern psychologists and scietists have a lot to learn from Afrikan Psychology and other native folk wisdom but I guess they and the rest of us will only believe what is only put through lab tests/experimentation and written down in paper as truth.

If only we could tune in more often to our innate wisdom/spirit, we would be like babies and be able to avert danger/negative vibrations…
