Not Safe: Women Using Bleach to Make Their Skin Glow

The high price of beauty; is it worth it?

There seems to be a trend rising below the radar (until now) that is dangerous and involves home facials being carried out with household bleach. The idea is the chemical will make your skin glow.

Though there are medical warnings galore, including the very likely possibility that bleach will actually burn your skin, the determination in these cases are unparalleled. The problem is then compounded by the internet forums with anonymous users claiming their use of the chemical at home has exposed them to anti-aging and renewal benefits, as reported by Mail Online.

The craze looks to have started after the release of a November study at Stanford University School of Medicine. The experiment consisted of mice with radiation dermatitis being bathed in a diluted bleach solution for 30 minutes a day.

The study produced results worthy of making some women want to use their laundry detergent on their face.

The researchers concluded that “the inexpensive, widely available household chemical could provide a new way to treat skin damage caused by radiation therapy, excess sun exposure or aging.” Overall, “animals bathed in the bleach solution experienced less severe skin damage and better healing and hair regrowth than animals bathed in water.”

Underscore animals.

Scottsdale, Arizona-based plastic surgeon Dr. Daniel Shapiro warns against using the findings to warrant bleach home beauty treatments.

“I wouldn’t recommend trying the bleach facial at home. . . We are not chemists, and we cannot produce the exact dilution rate the Stanford scientists used,” Shapiro told The main concern is that the .0005 dilution rate that was used in the study might not be replicated by people in their homes. “Any higher concentration of bleach can burn your skin,’ he continued.

At-home practitioners are going online to how-to forums like WikiHow for instructions. As reported by Mail Online, the site reads, “Having a special party, an occasion you want to get that glow for your skin here is the good way to get that! Bleaching is a good alternative who want to get the glow for the face at home avoiding expensive salon trips. So lets get the stuff ready!”

The site also reportedly advises its users to apply the cream bleach, which is usually for lightening facial hair. This should not be done of course, the site advises, until a homemade soothing face pack for afterwards has also been prepared.

Big brands like Christian Dior have entered the market, releasing their own “brightening” cream lines. Dr. Shapiro offered, “The ingredient helps make collagen thicker, and I do see how bleach can be a potentially promising product for anti-aging based on this study. But it will need a great amount of work.”

This is not news to anyone but the author. Black women all over the world have been using various concoctions (homemade and commercial) to WHITEN their skin. The hazardous effects of this have been known for decades. So now you have a bunch of researchers wasting precious funding to reinvent the wheel. Lemme see if I’ve got this right — I want to treat my damaged skin by damaging it further. Yeah, that makes perfect sense. After the bleach burns your skin you won’t notice the radiation burns, or the sun spots. Sublimely brilliant. Not! They’ve discovered that a diluted bleach solution works well on furry animals and now recommend that humans use it on their faces for “glowing” skin. d-a-m-n right glowing, that’s what things do when they’re burning! The greater tragedy here is the alarming number of people who refer to the internet and believe whatever they read. There are lots of people marketing garbage online and posting fake reviews just to sell products. I’ve got a great recipe for “glowing skin”, stay black (…brown, or whatever)! I’ve never seen skin more beautiful than black skin. I mean the darkest of the darkest. If anyone is selling a bottle of make-me-blacker that only requires one application and won’t poison me or have any damaging effects, holla back at a sista. You got a money maker there.

Just a heads up to the sistas: PLEASE beware of the infomercial product Rx for Brown Skin. That product is being pushed at us and the ad promises smooth, “glowing” skin. What the ad DOESN’T tell you that among the products they try to push on us are products that contain bleaching cream (“fade cream). Seems MOST products for black women contain bleaching cream. If you want a more even skin tone, just use a mild exfoliating scrub before bed every night and use a moisturizer afterwards. A pair of exfoliating gloves will give you the same results.
