Taye Diggs was born on January 2, 1971 in Newark, New Jersey although he grew up in Rochester, New York.  Over the past decade, we have seen Taye Diggs act in many television programs and films, but he is notably known for his roles in the film, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, the musical and film Rent, and the popular television series Private Practice.  This talented actor graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in musical theater and got his first acting gig as a performer at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia.  Over the years, Taye Diggs has caught a lot slack for marrying a White woman, although he played in many popular Black movies that often paired him with a Black female love interest.

 His wife Idina Menzel is also an actress and appeared with her husband in three stage plays.  The couple has one child.

  • Scott Leo Diggs is really his name.  Taye Diggs friends used to call him “Scottaye,” so he shortened it to “Taye,” and has been using that name ever since.
  • His role as “Winston Shakespeare” in the film How Stella Got Her Groove Back called for a tall actor with dreads.  Although he didn’t fit the description, he landed the role.
  • He married his wife at the same Jamaican resort where How Stella Got Her Groove Back was filmed.
  • Taye Diggs came under fire when he admitted that he had self-esteem issues well into his adulthood because of his dark skin.  He stated that model/ actor Tyson Beckford helped him get over this issue when he saw him in a magazine and people actually were calling Tyson beautiful. Taye said, “When I saw Tyson Beckford hailed as this beautiful man by all people, that caused a shift in my being. I remember literally waking up and walking the streets the next day and, because I had a bald head as well, feeling a little bit more proud.”
  • Taye Diggs is no punk! He reportedly apprehended a would be burglar who broke into his home.  After returning from the 2013 Screen Actors Guild Awards with his wife, Taye Diggs came face to face with a stranger who ran from him.  Taye Diggs gave chase and managed to catch the man and held him until police arrived.
  • Taye Diggs just can’t get a break when it comes to colorism.  A satire site published some untrue comments about Taye Diggs and Taye came back swinging. They reportedly stated that Taye Diggs said that being around all “them Black women” made him miss his wife after he filmed The Best Man Holiday.  Taye took to twitter and said in his defense, “Regarding the preposterous quote about black women: It is false. I have not and would never say such a thing. Ever. Period.”
