Melissa Harris-Perry Show Makes Jokes about Mitt Romney’s Black Grandchild

An episode of the Melissa Harris-Perry show on MSNBC has led to outrage after an ill-timed joke about Mitt Romney’s black grandchild has left people concerned.   Harris-Perry, the host of the show, showed a picture of Romney’s large family on a Christmas card to the panelists, most of whom did not vote for Romney in the last election.

‘It really sums up the diversity of the Republican party, the RNC. At the convention, they find the one black person,’ Dean Obeidallah said about Kieran Romney, Mitt’s black adopted son.

The panelists were asked to caption the video with jokes, and it continued to get interesting.

“One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just isn’t the same,” said actress Pia Glenn.

Harris-Perry chimed in by stating that she was looking forward to seeing a wedding between Kieran Romney and North West, the daughter of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian.

Viewers and conservatives alike were upset about the jokes because families are expected to be off-limits in political attacks.  When conservatives attack Sasha and Malia Obama, the left typically objects to this behavior.

Kieran, whose mother is named Andelyne, has a name that means “little and black” in Gaelic.   The son was adopted by his parents in September.

“MSNBC has become a club where the smug go to exchange hateful opinions and reassure each other it’s acceptable,” tweeted Romney 2012 senior adviser Stuart Stevens.

After the segment, Glenn, who is a woman of color, apologized for her remarks.

“Adoptive parents giving a child of ANY ethnicity a loving home,I apologize.I absolutely did not intend to harm you but it seems that I have,” she tweeted.

Are these jokes acceptable or are they over the line?  If Romney were a Democrat, would they be joking about his child in the same way? Melissa Harris-Perry’s grandparents on her mother’s side are white and President Barack Obama also has white grandparents.  Would they make jokes about their families too or would they hold back because they are Democrats?

The family should be off-limits. What’s good for one side is good for the other. I’m surprised at MSNBC for this, even more surprised at MHP.

Okay, Families are suppose to be off limits…Well, not so when it comes to President Obama and his family. Why is it that his children were attacked by the Tea Party and no one held them accountable.

Martin Beshear was recently forced to resign because he made a comment about Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin, has made so many inappropriate comments about so many people (which includes) our President that when it comes to her or hers it all of a sudden becomes vicious.

Sarah Palin needs to be held accountable for some of the idiot comments she makes including when she made targets on maps and made comments about ” Don’t Retreat, Re-load. Those comments made by her with a map on different states including the one that Gabby Gifford lived in.

Do not talk about petty issues when we have people that have a microphone that is causing people to be murdred and hurt.

All of these comments were pretty tired to say the least! Romney’s son probably did adopt this child so black people would vote for his dad in the next election! BUT NOBODY CARES BECAUSE MITT IS STILL A RACIST HOLDING A BLACK CHILD! Why are they dressing him in PINK? They must be try to turn him INTO A GIRL(gay) already! SMH!

Toni, you are right on, what is good for the goose is good for the gander! They really were not talking about the baby but the fact that their family looked like the republican party. Those sorry crackers have said any and everything they can about President Obama and his family, as for Sara Palin she is just a dumb ass who was governor of a state that was about the size of Long Island when it comes to people, so my 11 year old grandson could have been governor, most of the state has no people living in it. Has anyone asked Sara of late what books she has read, guess not since everyone already knows she does not read!

That is the one show that I missed so I didn’t see the picture. But I am tired of people always criticizing MSNBC’s News show. So what! The Fox news and right wing media say and do anything they want about even the President and his family and not a damn person says one thing. Yet already 2 people with shows on this network has been asked to apologize for things that are no ways vile and evil as the things said on right wing media. Martin Barshear had to apologize to the horrible idiot Palin because of something he responded to about that hillbilly. As Romney said, himself, “It’s sauce for the gander”. Get over it. I couldn’t care less what is said about the lot of them. I guess now we are on our way to losing another good news show. BTW I’m hoping no one on the panel voted for Romney.

One thing that everyone apparently overlooked is that his SON and not racist mitt adopted the child. Mitt had nothing to do with it and only took the opportunity to exploit the situation in his favor by holding the baby for a photo op

I have always thought that Melissa had a big uncontrollable lisp mouth but is always quick to defend blacks when some racial slur is thrown their way how foolish and childess and immature for her to take part as a journalist in such a racial converstion aimed at an innocent child,If Mitt Romey’son so the need to adopt an African American child than good for him but because it’s Mitt Romey there has too be some wrong motive something to make him more apeasing to blacks. This is why there is so much racisim in the world today because of idiotic comments like those on Melissa Harris-Perry panel she should have been smart enough to cut the conversation off at the knees simple as that or better yet she should have been fired just as Martin Bashir was for his stupid comments right now you are a disgrace to black people and for the record Ms. Harris-Perry I am black

Well if you are Black I’m sure you realize that Harris-Perry is not the cause of racism in this country. That is, unless you don’t watch the news at all and listen to what these people say about the president and his family. Go over to Fox News and comment on that. You sound more like the disgrace to Black people because you don’t even follow the news. You were either told or ran across this article and saw you chance to vent.

I know that she is not the cause of racism in this country but she certainly added too it by her ofensive comments. And it’s not about tit for tat what Fox says or does as oppose to what Msnbc says or do,no race of people in this country or any where else has been discriminated against more than blacks so being that we should be even more sensitive to others when racial comments are made no one has experience the pain, hurt. and humiliation like African Americans. As for me following the news I am well informed and up to date on what’s going on in the world and not like you who only see one side or what’s pleasing in your eye sight and to your ears I look at the entire picture from all angles and formed an unbias opinion wheather it’s about the black race or any other race of people

Can you state specifically, what she actually said about the kid or the Romney’s that was offensive? You must not have seen the segment, as the truth is, MHP never made a negative comment about the child nor the Romney family during the segment. This is mis-reported and you just jumped in to pile on something that was a lie in the first place and added more lies. She probably was not fired like Bashir, because she actually did not say anything. Also, Melissa’s mom is white, and she was also an African American child raised in a Mormon family, just like Romney’s adopted grandson. Obama has a White mom and was raised by white grand parents also. You call them both racists and trouble starters. How does that fit into your logic?

Thank you Roesbud, under this president black people have lost all honesty and character and integrity. Harris-Perry is just pushing racism and blacks follow along like dumb sheep. Who should adopt black children black people with no jobs and no hope. No media is saying bad things about the president`s family, maybe they take to many expensive vacations. The POTUS does not even talk to black people, he talks to Hispanics but not blacks and still many black people carry his water.Once he gets amnesty for 20 to 30 million illegals black people will disappear because the Dems will have their voting block for years to come and blacks will not be needed. My people do not let Obama push amnesty though it will destroy us, we have no jobs now, you do the math. Any black politician who wants this is no friend to black people. I am black also.

couldn’t agree more, the comments and laughter was shameful. Any child who has the opportunity to have a good home with loving parents should not be made fun of. MHP should know better. I am very surprised that she would do this. She might get the boot behind this, just as Bashir and Baldwin did, although what she said is nowhere near as vulgar as their comments were. Even though I cannot stand Palin, who never apologizes for anything she says, and gets away scott free, Melissa I thought had more class, so I am sure she will not make this mistake again, if she is allowed to continue with her show.

@Rosebud, You going on-and-on about nothing, you didn’t see the program you are going on what you have heard someone else say. Because if you had heard Melissa, you would know this is being blown way out of control it wasn’t racist, it wasn’t anything for her to be fired about. Yes I have said this black baby was adopted for a reason you have a wagon-full of white children and you adopt a black baby yea, “give me a break.” You also said this is why so much racism in the world today because of idiotic comments like those of Melissa, you are so damn stupid, when God take all the OLD Whites from this earth then everybody will live as ONE until that happen there will be racism and Melissa have nothing to do with it. Sarah Palin, have made so many inappropriate comments about our President and his family you never open your mouth as long as the dirty comments about our President and his family whether it’s from Sarah Palin or any Republican it’s alright because it’s not racist.

This segment of Harris-Perry’s show was in poor taste and unbecoming of Harris-Perry. Malissa has to learn that being cute on her television show is not acceptable. This kind of tv journalism is what turns viewers off. I like Malissa and her show but she has to use better judgment than she did in this instance.

Where were these conservative and tea party jokers when they thought it was ok to smart off about the Obama Children, children should by all means be off limits but it appears the so called Christian conservatives and tea party racist has not gotten the message so I guess the liberals have not received the message either! Leave all of the children alone and kick the adults butts with words!

Melissa, with her huge ego and machine-gun mouth, really got off track this time, and needs to apologize. Especially since this involves a child, which should certainly not be tolerated by this TV channel. Even though it’s run by Jewish boys, and other whites who are liberals, and are the “slave masters” of Melissa, Al Sharpton, and even President Obama. David Axelrod is part of it, and he’s the main Hebrew that brought Obama to Washington, and he’s still bossing him, and these blacks on MSNBC, as well. And you can rest assured that she won’t say anything negative about Jewish and other white kids, are she will be immediately told to pack and hat, and on the first plane to Louisiana. — Rev. Far too many of the comments and replies fail to acknowledge that MHP and her panel were not knocking the child but, rather, the apparent cynical move by prominent members of a “religion” that only recently — in the historical sense — abandoned the tenet of the Mormon faith which held that black people were inferior and, therefore, ineligible for the church hierarchy and, if I recall correctly, ineligible to ascend to Mormon heaven. In other words, the adoption of the black child was symbolic atonement for the church’s racist past.

One thing more, my brothers and sisters, especially those of you criticizing MHP: in crafting your comments and replies, please know that they become more credible when they reflect a firm grasp of punctuation and subject-verb agreement in English.
