Erica Campbell Responds to Dress Backlash: “I Thought I Looked Cute”

By  |

The controversy over the sexy Christian continues, this time with Erica Campbell right in the middle of it.  Campbell set off some alarm bells with an image for her forthcoming album that showed her in a white dress that hugged her curves in a way that would make any man want to take a closer look.

Some people thought it was a nice way to complement her figure, but others thought she was pushing it a little bit too hard.  She is the second major black female figure in the spiritual community to be challenged and questioned for her secular ways.  The other was actress Meagan Good, who wore a dress to the BET Awards that would put Lil Kim to shame.

But where do you draw the line?  Should there be a line? did an interview with Campbell to ask her about the controversy and how she felt about it.  Erica is probably not all that upset with the controversy, since it’s going to sell some records.  She says that she’s comfortable with who she is and where she’s going.  She also reflected on her mindset at the time that the picture was taken.

“I’m taking it in stride and I’m keeping it moving. When we took the picture I felt beautiful, I felt confident, I felt sexy and I felt strong. I thought I looked cute, but it obviously offended some people, which was never my intention.”

Erica says that the dress controversy is a great lesson for young girls about being confident in who you are.  She says that God made you that way for a reason and that you can’t let anyone make you feel bad about it.  She also says that she felt that she looked pretty good that day.

“This is about confidence and realizing that God made you and that you are beautiful just the way you are. I think that young girls shouldn’t only get s*xy images from people who are not proclaiming Jesus. But I am. And I’m cute too.”

Is there ever a line though?  Earlier in the week, Melissa Harris-Perry took some heat when she and other feminists were applauding a young exotic dancer at the University of Texas who says that she “twerks for Jesus.”  Is she also a symbol of pride and confidence or setting herself up for a bad situation?

She looks GORGEOUS! She is a dutiful Mother, Wife, Sister and Daughter why can’t she be shapely, sexy and a Christian? People STOP the MADNESS! This is why so many people run from the hypocracy of the church. I bet Jesus thinks she is FABULOUS!

Ms. Campbell looked quite stunning and like a beautiful saved, holy ghost filled christian that she is. This is what we call natural beauty.

Exactly! The fact that she thought she looked good speaks volumes. Erica Campbell is trying to brand her image and sell CDs. Their music is inspirational at best. All of the excuses and deflections made by people about her looking good and being sexy are comical.

So true. Even the super high heels that are so fashionable today have a history in prostitution. Men who were looking for ladies of the evening knew who they were without asking because of the high heels they wore. Research it and see for yourself.

Is there a connection between Christianity and behavior? Is how we dress–behavior?

If Christ came back and summoned each of us, how would we dress for such a meeting?

What ever choices we made in preparing for this meeting, what would be our rationale?
if we have the means we typically dress in particular ways for particular occasions (ways that are usually wrapped up in cultural expectations).

Since I don’t know her and what it is she is supposed to represent except it appears that some in the Christian community object to her presenting and promoting this particular representation of herself.

What does Erica do in the religious world? I s she a minister or gospel singer? If so I don’t think its appropriate to dress like a hooker in church!
Ladies you can deny it all you want, but we DRESS to get the attention of men.
Why is that dress so tight? If you really have a cute figure it would show under a crinoline slip! No reason for the ingratiating ass.Its out right repulsive in church!

Does she need to scare her followers with this Red Carpet type of social divas dress, forgeting her spiritual and moral calling? Who will allow his or her daughter to attract evil mindedness into their lives? Next time dont feel you’re cute but be cautious! Try to avoid the ways of the world, so that you may not be tempted to fall prey as you have done! God is a Kind God and He’ll continue to bless you!

Have you watched their TV show? It is far from spiritual. All you see is them arguing with everyone, each other, their manager. Their show is about when is the next performance? How much money will a promoter pay for us to perform?

Dress is nice and the shape to die for. Is dhows she is comfortable with herself and covered herself up in the eyes of God. I myself would rethink the look, but due to the times the look of Christians has changed, in speech, dress and their ability to help others. Do not criticize or judge for all see things differently. Continue to praise him my dear.

I think there are certain clothes you wear out to clubs, parties etc., and then I feel there are clothes you wear to church. This is just how I roll and feel about the situation. yes, the look of Christians has changed and not for the better. There is so much going on in the church these days that nothing would surprise me. Yes, she is shaped nice but that was a “come on and get it” outfit!

The more I live the more I see this to be true, this world is upside down. What is wrong is deemed right and what is right is wrong. I am sorry you can be in the world and not be of the world. What is the difference. If we look, talk, walk and act like the world where is the difference. If you are truly saved you would know God is looking for that difference. I stopped watching their show when I didn’t see that difference that God requires. If you want to look, talk and act like the world then so be it. That dress is disgraceful and every time I hear their music I see it as music not worship.

    • Leslie

      December 19, 2013 at 7:54 am

Exactly Rena! We share the same thoughts. I have never bought a Mary Mary CD and never will. I don’t support any of these “feel-good, inspirational” artists that tickle the ear with hyperbole and cliche!

This is why I don’t FOLLOW any religious doctrines….
Too many interpretations and controlling assumptions…
Can’t eat this, wear that, go here, talk with this person, marry that person…
I bet there is a man on this thread who “openly opposes” the dress, touching himself or reaching for a hard copy of her image to add to the “fun” RIGHT NOW!
Get over yourself or jump off a bridge, hypocrites.

I totally agree kdmorris! Yet these same people, especially some of the women on here, are quick to run to the defense of a lying, cheating, fornicating pastor. I can remember when the scandal broke about Eddie Long. So many church people were quick to vilify you if you said anything about this so-called man of God who raped little boys, yet they are trying to tear Erica down for wearing a dress that is covering her body from neck to knee. Wake up people and remember “judge not, lest ye be judged!”

The dress is cute and it’s an individual’s choice but I personally believe as Christian women we need to look different from the world. There is a time and a place to show your curves and your breasts.(In the privacy of your home with your husband) I believe representing Christ should cause us to look differently and yes dress differently. What Erica is wearing is selling CDs.

Thank the Lord she only has to stand before Him at her day of judgment!
I focus on my own behavior and practices and don’t try to force my beliefs, practices, assumptions and standards on anyone else. You must rightly divide the word for yourself and govern yourself accordingly. I just don’t think God is going to judge us on what anyone else says, thinks or does. It is a heart thing…is my heart in the wrong place?

Looking “cute” is one thing but being a married woman wearing an outfit that causes other men to lust after you is another thing. Even an unmarried woman should pause and consider what message she’s trying to send with her attire and what sort of attention she’ll get as a result. A married woman in particular should try her best to protect her privates for the privacy of her husband’s eyes only.

Unfortunately some people allow fashion to blind them to a sense of discernment without even knowing it. I wish her well in her endeavors and pray that she hears at least a little of what I’m saying if she reads this post.

It is not about Gospel Music! Anyone can sing and play Gospel Music, without being a Christian. There is no written code that one has to be a Christian to sing Gospel Music. Singer’s cross all genre of music. However, if this singer is publicly professing to be a Christian Woman who is a Gospel singer; than her dress should reflect her Christian morals. A Christian woman dresses with modesty! She respects her God and His instruction. She respects herself and will not publically expose her body.
Wearing tight fitting revealing clothing is not the dress of a modest woman! Contrary to what some people who are not committed to living a virtuous Christian life, there is no such thing as “sexy Christian attire.” A Christian woman is free to dress as sexy as she desires; in her home…for her husband! Her body and its gifts are reserved for her “husband” only! Every man she comes in contact with should not be able to view her body though her clothing.
The Gospel singer Erica Campbell, of Mary-Mary’s dress is too revealing for a Christian woman! This sort of attire would appear to be for a secular woman. Not a woman who is saved, sanctified and spirit filled. A true Christian woman does not compromise her morals or Faith to achieve success in the music industry, even if she is singing Gospel! If God has blessed her with a talent to sing His praises, then she should do so in a manner befitting a woman of God!
Women are constantly complaining that men disrespect and exploit them. If they want this to change, than it is time for women to stop dressing indecently; showing their bodies to the world; and demand respect by dressing in modesty and carrying themselves in a decent respectable manner. This is a woman a man will defend if any man disrespects her!
Don’t get carried away with “personalities!” Gospel singers can and often do live a life that is contrary to the teachings of Christianity. They have a talent in voice and their music is inspiring! However, they are subject to error and mistakes in judgment the same as you and I. I trust Sis. Erica’s choice to wear this revealing dress on her Gospel Album is just an error in judgment. If this is true, than you should see a change coming soon! Proverbs 31:10 says, “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.”

Erica looks beautiful, the only ones complaining are unattractive, overweight out of shape black women and gay ass black men who wish they were her. Instead of criticizing her. Worry about the phony pastors that are taking money from po’ people for 15 years for the building fund for a building that ain’t never gonna be built. Worry about the pastors that’s fucking half the female congregation and a third of the males, and worry about pastors that molesting boys and girls and claiming they asked for it. Worry about the deacons thats pocketing some of the building fund money for the building that ain’t gonna never be built. Worry about the gay men using “Christian” beards as a cover for the dude they suck off when Sunday service is over and they’re counting the building fund money. And to you hypocritical, waving your hands in the air Christians women who claim god don’t make no mistakes, but you wear those fugly ass tacking looking weaves because you’re ashamed of your own kinky hair because you REALLY DO think god made a mistake on your hair, AND who fuck and suck on Saturday night and show up at church on Sunday morning with dried cum in the corner of your mouths, all yall need to have a seat, stop being so critical and shut the fuck up, because if half of you broads looked a fraction as good as Erica, you’d be praise dancing seven days a week. Hypocrites.

Erica is a gorgeous woman with a beautiful body, I love seeing my sistas looking beautiful. And for you unattractive, overweight, out of shape, couldn’t PAY a man to take you on a date, bad weave wearing hags who are hating on her, please have a seat, and worry about your pastor stealing money from you, fucking half the female congregation and a third of the male congregation, molesting little boys and girls, while you sit back and blame the kids while kissing pastors crusty azz. You broads love to say god don’t make no mistakes, but yall keep wearing those dusty ass weaves, so you really do think god made a mistake giving you kinky hair. Religious hypocrites make me throw up in my mouth.

I believe she looks great. I also believe we are doing a lot of judging. How do we know what God thinks about what she has on? I’m sure there is no where in the bible that says ERICA YOU SHOULD NOT WEAR THAT CURVE HUGGING DRESS. We are not God!!!… she grown. We are ok with the sins we commit etc. When was the last time you looked at you and said you know better? A lot of you all should be doing that now with the post you put up. Keep your mouth off the people of God. First natural then spiritual. She is naturally shapely and that has nothing to do with her spirit. If i burned all your clothes and everything you own, Im sure someone will see you naked, but should we judge you? That dress does not make or break her and a nasty person will l**t no matter what. Nasty people can look at an innocent child and l**t.She probably cannot shout in that dress lol but she looks amazing.

And fyi im sure she would sing in a church free of charge but performing is her JOB if your job stop paying you im sure you would raise hell. She has every right to promote her CD’s and music etc. I promote my job as much as possible. The talent is a gift from God. She was just blessed to be able to use it as a way to get income.I would be so elated if i could use my gift of singing to earn income as well.

These negative comments is the reason why folks don’t want to come to church because of you so called Christians! GOD said come as you are not as the so called Christians think you should! One thing is for sure, your negative comments are making satan happy he always wanted division especially amongest the followers of Christ. And you wonder why your kids won’t go to church, they can’t meet your requirements! GOD’s requirements are fine, they just can’t get to him because they have to deal with you!!! You’re so worried about her dress that you aren’t willing to hear her message! Judge not yet ye be judged!!!!!
Thanks Erica for showing people you can look good covered up, you can still believe in GOD and even when you’re under attack, you can stand strong especially when it’s fellow believers attacking you!

She is a very curvy and beautiful lady. The cover is fine. People are always going to have a problem with what you wear, especially as a Christian because we are often scrutinized for everything. She’s lost some weight and feels great about it. If anything, we(as women) should be inspired! I know I am!
